Description Really not sure about this piece. First time I've produced a figurative textile piece, usually I just like doing abstracted images of cell structures, but I like fish... Mixes machine embroidery, melted fabrics and handmade fymo beads

Cool, I'll add you now if you like and then you can just send us a note whenever you want to upload something, no pressure . Good luck with the knitwear degrees that sounds like a lot of fun. I did costume for degree but I love all forms of textiles. Remember to watch ~TextilesAlliance and we'll watch you Can't wait to see some more stuff.

Oh I shall do!!! Costume... I was almost going to do that... I don't know why... but I had to make a decision... I hate making decisions... I couldn't even decide between menswear or womenswear so I choose all fashion degrees and at the unis where it only did seperate courses I choose knitwear (haha - that was Central st Martins...) and the other in Nottingham Trent - the only two in the country that do knitwear! Where did you do your degree??

I went to the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. It's the smallest place ever!
Have you seen a book called Knitwear in Fashion by Sandy Black? That's got some really cool stuff in it like knitwear installations and knitwear in performance art...heh I always do this to people, I'm a total book fanatic.

Oh Bournemouth - I remember that...I also thought it seemed small looking at the prospectus... small is good in some way though, eh? I bet it was pretty down though?? Oh Knitwear in performance art... wow... I'll note that book down and I'll get it off Amazon at the end of this month (you can never have too many books... I am also mad on books... they are just there when you need them ) Theres this webite I found too : [link] with some gorgious textiles art displayed there... I also have this book on (from the textiles of the world series) Japanese textiles... so inspiring!

ShahrazadStrange In reply to Andrejuno [2005-01-19 21:43:38 +0000 UTC]

It's very small. I kinda liked that though, I'm not the most ambitious person, I just like to sit and get on with making things, which is why I have no money at the moment lol.
Heh Amazon is evil, they stole all my money and replaced it with books
I'll check the website out, i had a little look, it looks cool

you should enquire at your local art gallery (we have one, called Drumcroon... its an art education centre and they frequently exhibit new and upcoming artists there!) and see if you can become an artist in residence and also exhibit your fabulous textiles there too... its worth a try??

*gasp* gorgeous! i know what you mean about working representationally. that's a big word. whew. it took me awhile to go down that road at all. it's very interesting that you work with cell forms as well, that's imagery that i use in my drawings and paintings. i lovelovelove seeing them in your textiles, the layering is fabulous and the texture is so wonderful. i love the idea of these soft cells. i normally see them as hard walled, thick bodied creatures. in fabric with all your colours, they have a whole new life in my mind. it's like...cells on holiday.

ShahrazadStrange In reply to alanabalana [2004-09-05 21:52:12 +0000 UTC]

I love cell forms, I have this book published by Phaidon i think called Heaven and Earth and it has all these cell structures and then pictures of galaxies as well. Thanks so much for your comment, it really means a lot to me! I guess I'm a very girly- girl so I love taking cells and making them all pink and "squadgy". I think cells are very beautiful too, it's amazing to think all that detail exists in a minute thing. I'm trying to do a few more figurative things but I often worry that something like this piece could turn into something you expect to see at a Woman's Institute needlework class!

hehe... I was stoked about joining tex.alliance last night and was trying to tell my boyfriend what a textile is exactly... so I'm sitting there trying to tell him that it's a woven type of cloth in general... but textiles are made from many materials nowadays. I was telling him about your work, and how incredibly amazing it is... and trying to describe what it is that you do... and I couldn't paint a picture exactly of your work. So I just told him that I'd show him in the morning... well I just showed him and his jaw dropped. He can definately admire and apreciate work like this, he's always seeing me like a mad woman hovering over my sewing machine... and he was in aww when he saw this and a couple of your other pieces. Seriously, I think your work is incredible, and just had to share that with you. I'm sure you already know... but just in case you haven't heard it in a bit... you kick ass gal!

Thanks so much for all the nice things you say makes me all encouraged to do new stuff.
I'm so happy you joined as you have loads of ideas and we need people like that! When I first came here I thought there were hardly any people interested in textiles, how wrong was I!!! You and your style of design are such a breath of fresh air. We'll kick ass together!!

Hey again! most of the stuff on the piece is like fabric sewn on top of the background, sewn in place and then painted into and stuff. Oh and if anyone's interested I sell stuff at my website *pimps self out* By the way is anyone else completely overwhelmed by the huge amount of smilies here? It like takes me half an hour to reply to stuff! lol

Hey thanks! I wasn't sure about it myself as all my stuff is usually abstract non figurative stuff. I love fish too, they're easier to draw than people anyway.
