The cold was bitter but her mismatch of clothing gave her some protection as she walked down the road, past cars with frost coated windows. Her walk was wide and waddling, the bow that served as her defence against the roving wolves also serving as a crutch to move herself along.
“Can’t be far now” Astrid thought, conscious of how tight her makeshift poncho was about her midriff. Her belly was huge, bulging outwards in a great mound that weighed heavily on her hips. She’d done her best to swaddle it in many layers, wrapping herself up like a Christmas present. “I’ve been walking for at least an hour. The lodge has got to be here somewhere”
The pregnant mother’s stomach growled, the acids finishing the digestion of the can of beans she had hungrily gulped down a few hours before. A small stirring feeling followed as the baby inside her moved about, sensing its mother’s discomfort to the cold.
“A bit further.... then I can rest my legs” Astrid glanced about some more, her skin pale and cheeks red from the chill. “Got to be a phone I can call back to Molly for more directions.... maybe I should have stayed with her.... get some hot soup and a proper bed”
Another audible grumble came from her middle.
She was getting hungry.
“Just a bit more... maybe they’ll have some tomato soup in there... or a new set of gloves”
