Description Would you be proud of me?
Are you proud of me?

Link of Twilight Princess pays a visit to the place where his ancestor's bones rest.

I figure, with so many Zelda games along such a confounding timeline (with some games expressly stating that the Hero of their game is not the first and only Hero of Hyrule), something like this is bound to happen at some point - that is, one Link finding another Link's grave. I also found myself feeling a bit sorry for the Links of some of the newer games while playing them (Wind Waker and Twilight Princess) because in-game NPCs are always comparing them to the Hero that came before.

My personal favorite Link is the fanon-dubbed "Hero of Twilight" (Twilight Princess Link). I always felt a little sad for him because people in the game were always talking about and comparing him to "the ancient Hero" and do so for a while before really recognizing him as a Hero in his own right. (Though, don't get me wrong, I love the Hero of Time, too! He's got to be an awesome ancestor to have...)

Link has the Ordon Shield here because I haven't seen it depicted very much in fan art and I like its heraldry - even if I fail at painting it symetrically.

The inscription on the gravestone is in both Hylian and an "ancient sacred language"- er, English. I like to convey meaning with my fan art and I felt that the meaning of this would be lost if I'd painted it all in Hylian. A real-world language was needed, and since I'm an English-speaker... I suppose I could have done it in Spanish, but English was the easiest choice.

The text is all hand-painted, copying down what I wrote in Word in "TP-Hylian" font, which I got from the Downloads page on this site for those intersted. It reads, at least in parts not obscured by the living Link:

Herein Lies
LINK
Hero of Time
Savior of Hyrule
He lived and died a hero.
May Time never forget his deeds.

Acrylic on Canva-Paper, feverish bouts of painting over a two-day period.

This is the first Deviation I've uploaded where the page has given me the "Critique" feature. I'm not sure what it's about yet and I don't plan upon working anymore on this particular painting, but I'm up for suggestions/tips for future works.

Just don't whine to me about "killing off" the Hero of Time. Canon did it, and I've "killed" multiple Links in my fanfictions - When it comes to fictional characters (especially those I love, it seems, strangely) I'm rather heartless.

He's looking at his own grave... Awkward huh? Since he's a multi-incarnate hero. O_o...

Very interesting piece. Did you know Nintendo released an official timeline? As well as some interesting info. Like, the Hero's Shade in Twilight Princess is the Hero of Time and TP Link's ancestor?

That's pretty deep. I like it! I've wondered what would happen if one link found out about another, and I think you've captured this quite nicely, it fits very well with Twilight Princess' art style.

Very nice traditional work... I especially like the leaves and your textures on the stone.

And this is a subject I've often wondered about, too!

Actually, TP is on the Timeline where no one knows he's the hero of time, so his tombstone wouldn't say that.

Depends upon your interpretation. I'm a fan fiction writer- I've got tons of scenarios. I don't have much paitence for people who try to "show their smarts" to me - to me, artistic license trumps all. I am deliberate in all I do, I don't need to be "informed" by other fans. Anyway, as I see it, even after Termina, the first Link is *still* the Hero of Time - to me, there's nothing saying that he didn't become a hero for Hyrule again and used that title.

If you're too much of a canon-stickler, stay away from all of my "Western" art and the fanfiction for it in which I went far enough to purposefully create my own Zelda timeline that I *know* doesn't remsemble what everyone says is canon.

Enjoy the rest of my fanart if you want, just before you comment, know that I'm a big believer in artistic license.

...
Well... That was unexpectedly... violent? Or just angry sounding? Or just my mind reading your words in an aggressive voice since most of me thinks that most people hate me, though a tiny bit of my tells me that isn't true?
Did you read MY words aggressively?
Is that a magic mammal skull as your avatar?
I'm sorry if you found my words aggressive. I never mean to be unless everything is all caps and full of exclamation marks.

I'm sorry. I actually toned down a bit... I'd just come from a non-fandom website that I'd been browsing/reading comments on for hours that made me get a "threshold for smart-asses" as it were, and, coming here, it seems it made me interpret your words as "agressive" since I was around a lot of aggression. I interpreted you as being smart-ass. I'm sorry if you meant to be totally innocent.

My avatar is a calf's skull I painted with a sunset/moon and stars theme. I found it in the desert back when I lived in Arizona, cleaned it up and gave it a paint job.

It's fine, it's fine. That kind of always happens on the internet. Now, I DO have a tendency to be a canon stickler, but elseworlds and fill ins are cool with me. I've got plenty of mini plots and such going on in my head, and I think that it would have been awesome if Link was aware of the Hero of Time in Twilight Princess. In fact, I'm one of the many who subscribe to the "Oot Link is both the Hero's Shade and TP Link's ancestor" theory. Which would, in combination with this picture, result in a conversation between the Shade and Link that would be made of awesome.

Also, is the skull in your gallery? I wanna see a bigger picture.

I do not have that particular skull up at DA (I'd have to scrounge for the pictures I have of it), but if you check out my gallery and click on the sub-gallery "Bone Art," you'll find many things like it.

Awesome work. This is very well done, and you're right, something like this is bound to have happened at some point or another along the LoZ timeline. I like how careful you were with the Hylian script on the gravestone. Also, I can't help but wonder what the expression on (the living) Link is right now, and what he's thinking...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shadsie In reply to Grenhoth [2009-04-11 05:05:40 +0000 UTC]

I think that Link is probably solemn and respectful, but he can have any kind of expression the viewer wishes.

I used a very tiny brush for the script... I actually have quite a few little brushes like that, due to hairs falling out and only leaving a little bit of brush... or did I use my nice, fairly new scriptliner brush? I can't remember.

What is possibly even more interesting, or even comical: If you subscribe to the "reincarnation theory" (that is, that Link is the same base-soul in a different body each good vs. evil cycle), then Link may, in fact, be looking at his OWN grave and is unaware of it.
