Ok, so wth is a Shimeji? It’s a Japanese mushroom.
Or, it’s a little character that runs around your desktop, climbs the walls and ceiling, occasionally throws browser windows off-screen, duplicates itself, and generally just acts cute. You can pick em’ up and throw them around too.
YES. I KNOW I CHEATED. THESE ARE SPRITES DIRECTLY FROM THE SNES SMW 2. only about 10 of them have been edited in any way (the skis, climbing/ceiling and egg-dancing ones)(and they all look awful)
Hurr hurr. I had no intentions of making this. I should just stick to the stuff on my list, but NOOOO. my friend brought her computer to school and ended up showing everyone her shimejis.
So then I downloaded a few.
Then I was mad because there wasn’t one for Yoshi.(seriously, drifbloon but no yoshi?)
SOOOO…
I started messing around with them.
Now, after over 9000 unnecessary hours of screwing up the images and trial and error, IT’S FINALLY DONE.
THE ANIMATIONS ARE STILL KINDA JERKY, BUT I DON’T CARE AT THIS POINT. I THINK IT’S PRETTY GOOD FOR A FIRST TRY, ESPECIALLY SINCE I CAN’T DRAW WORTH CRAP ON A COMPUTER.
IT’S FINALLY DONE.
Now to make one for knuckles!

IMPORTANT INFO.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD: YOU WILL NEED THE LATEST FLASH AND WINRAR (for unzipping the file. Google it if you don’t have winrar)
THESE DON’T WORK ON MACS
1. click download over there (duh)
2. open up whatever folder it saved to.
3. (FOR 98% OF COMPUTERS) open the .rar file and click the folder with the character’s name on it. In this case, it’s called yoshimeji.
4. extract the folder to some easy-to remember place
5. open the folder you just extracted and click Shimeji
a. (FOR A FEW RETARDED VISTAS LIKE MINE) DO NOT EXTRACT THE .RAR FILE. GO DIRECTLY INTO THE ARCHIVE AND CLICK THE SHIMEJI.EXE FROM THERE.
6. it might take awhile, but you should get a little icon on your taskbar. In this case it will be a Yoshi head. Clicking it will give you one more Shimeji. There are options in japanese, or more likely, "blank squarish".
a. 1: add a shimeji
b. 2: call all shimejis to cursor
c. 3: remove all but one shimeji
d. 4. bring back the windows the shimejis may have thrown offscreen
e. Turn off the shimeji.
DO NOT LEAVE THESE THINGS ALONE FOR ANY MORE THAN AN HOUR OR TWO.
if it doesn't work, ask google, not me.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN: NO PROGRAMMING REQUIRED
1. save a separate copy of the folder of the shimeji model you want to use.
2. Go into the img section in that folder and change all the images.
a. DO NOT RENAME ANYTHING.
b. IMAGES MUST BE .PNG
c. Make sure you have a transparent background.
d. Images CANNOT be in indexed mode. they will revert to solid black and white when flipped.
e. Images should face left
f. “appropriate” size is 128x128 pixels (this is by no means a strict rule. The programming will work with any size, but 128x128 works (as in looks) best. Don’t be afraid to make lots of rectangles of that general size to fit your images)
So, it’s actually really easy. Very time consuming and lots of “rules”, but still easy.
What each “shime” is used for
>note that there are many slightly different shimeji models, and this description only fits perfectly if you edit the model i've used here.
1-standing
2, 3-walking. Looped with 1 at various speeds
4-falling
5a-holding with cursor
5,6- struggling when being held
7-10-swinging around
11-idle
11b-11e-random single-frame poses
12-14-climbing wall
15-used at either end of the loop in 16-17
16, 17- random quick loop, usually plays while in "cursor follow" mod.
18, 19- land, get up
20, 21- alternate walking. Best if made to be some kind of crawling/sliding. still on 20, then inches forward as it switches to 21.
22-jump
23-25- moving on ceiling
26-look up
27-29-basically the same as 15-17. just an opportunity for different poses.
30-flashes up for a second before…
31-33- random animation loop. the character will overlap your taskbar during this, so it's best to have it dangling its legs or something similar.
34-36-pushing window walk loop
37-throwing window
38-41-cloning. Plays through somewhat slowly
42-46- cloning. Plays quickly with a small pause on the last image.
Random meaning you can make it do anything in those frames

if you're going to be away from the computer for a few hours, you should turn shimejis off. they can replicate like crazy and seriously lag your system if there gets too be too many.

if you don't have WinRar, you'll need that to uncompress the file. otherwise, no.

nope. you'll have to go back into its folder and click the shimeji.exe thing.

You can also make a shortcut and copy it to: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup (win7)

I accidently deleted all the shimejis i download (which was like 20).
Now ur Yoshi is gonna be the 2nd shimeji onto my Desktop !

I would make a Totodile one, but doing my character's shimeji took me five ours. So I understand how you feel.
Hm....shime6? That frame is the one where you hold him from the mouse. Shime1-4 is where he's walking, Shime5 is when he's falling, and then 6-10 is where he's hanging from the mouse.
If you'd like, take a look at the frames for mine. it took FOREVER to get it right (not to mention I kept having problems erasing white marks around my little Hiroshi's tail). [link]
