Because Ryou needs more love.

I'd been itching to draw Ryou again for a while. It was this year that I finally got around to watching Yu-Gi-Oh! season zero, and I enjoyed it a lot more than thought I would. This piece is an idea that sprang to mind out of the new found knowledge I got out of watching that. Although, it's taken forever for me to actually getting around to drawing it...

Anyway, it was nice to get to know the characters without the card games, Ryou Bakura was no exception. He kind of gets the short end of the stick in Duel Monsters and almost nothing of his character is ever explored because he is left out of the main group for the majority of the anime. He doesn't show up until quite late in YGO zero's 27 episode run, but we soon learn that there's something not quite right about this mysterious transfer student.

So far every other student that has joined Yugi's class (character of the day that Yugi has met) has been very obviously unhinged. Ryou Bakura becomes instantly popular with the girls for his looks and while he is extremely polite, he keeps to himself for the most part. He does makes friends with Yugi and the others, but he even keeps his distance from them. He expresses his love for games, much like Yugi, and in particular likes to play a tabletop RPG called Monster World. However, everyone who ever plays against Ryou in that game ends up in a coma and that is why he keeps transferring schools and why he has come to live in an apartment on his own. The truth is that Yami Bakura is the one putting Ryou's friends into comas. Ryou wants nothing more than to be able to play games with his friends forever and Yami Bakura decided that meant that putting the souls of those friends into the RPG character pieces. Yugi and co. are of course the next one to fall foul of this and become trapped in the game as playing pieces, while Yami Yugi plays against Yami Bakura to save them. They did sort of do a very brief retelling of the Monster World RPG game in YGO Duel Monsters, replacing the game pieces with cards, but you entirely lose that part of Ryou Bakura's backstory.

The main thing I took from Ryou's character in zero was his creative talent in making all his own model playing pieces for the game and going so far as to make them look like his friends whom he wanted to play games with. After winning against Yami Bakura, he even made a fully detailed scene of the battle he and his friends fought together.

Long story short. I wanted to draw Ryou sitting in his room having made a couple of new model figures. And daydreaming about a certain someone maybe.

Now, I need to go to bed.
