Hi.. this tutorial is great, im really happy for it. The result look really similar to the blizzard cinematics!
I'm using vray and i want to tune my parameters , but its difficult without using the same textures
So if you could share the file name of the textures from cgtextures it would be awesome.ย

I just have one question....Did everything and the result was awesome except when you start with Utility Bump Map combiner. The tutorial does not state where to add Utility Bump Map combiner.
Can you please guide ?

Hi. What version of 3ds Max are you using? This tutorial was made for 3ds Max 2010. Unfortunately the developers removed the Bump Combiner utility starting on 3ds Max 2011 and above, which is a real drag. What I did for this was to add the bump map to each material one by one. It's much more time consuming but I couldn't see any other way.

Hi Sgt, just a quick question, any chance of showing your lighting rig for this tut, or did you only use the single Skylight with HDR?
Additional - Awesome render.
Cheers

Thanks a ton, this is quite useful as all the tutorials i have found are to low as to cover multi materials or so high they assume you know several aspects of how to do them already, and my trial and error was pretty much just error, so thank a lot.

Very cool, I've been messing with 3ds/maya for about a year now, but am nowhere near as good as you. I had been thinking off and on about how you were able to chip the paint away. I hadn't thought of an alpha map which is weird since I figured that was how you did the dirt over the paint.
Thanks for the tutorial.

mate did you just go with the flow when building this or do you have a more technical process with side views/sketching/concept art? Or just watching the SC2 video a hell of a lot of times? would love to see a general step-by-step creation of the marine.
you work constantly makes me want to quit my shitty graphic art job and get into this, creating textures and seeing them shine makes me all warm inside but at work all they let me use is Blender.

Very nice, makes me want to do something with power armor. The one thing I found myself looking for that was missing was a shot of your uv layout, but the paint alpha mask texture shows it for the most part.

SgtHK In reply to Syklon [2010-06-09 21:31:18 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. I wanted to focus more on the hierarchy of the materials. Maybe I'll do a UV uwrapping tut someday.

Brilliant! This is a huge help, I am currently learning Maya,3D Studio Max, Mudbox, Soft Image, and Motion builder - this will be of great help in my learning! Well done.

SgtHK In reply to Stargate-Zero [2010-06-09 21:34:37 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome. Though if you are still learning, I'd advice you to learn one or two programs at a time (like 3ds Max and mudbox) instead of learning all these programs at once.

Stargate-Zero In reply to SgtHK [2010-06-09 22:28:33 +0000 UTC]
I'm actually only learning Maya right now - but those are the programs I got all together in the box that I purchased, so what I meant is: it's nice to have a tutorial for a program I will use later on. I'm quite aware of how much of a cluster jam it cam be to learn many quite complicated programs at once. Mudbox does go well hand in hand with Maya / 3ds Max, the Autodesk website had a very nice series of videos showing how Maya was used to create a model, importing it into Mudbox, and with mudbox doing all of the finer details and texturing and then exporting it back into Maya it was very interesting to get a glimpse of how various 3D animation and modeling programs work together as that is one of the things that were daunting to me at the start I was wondering how do all of these programs work in unison with each other, and I still wonder and discover to this day.
