Thank you much!!!

I thought it would be good to show some scale with this piece. I often imagine a piece I see on line or in a magazine to be of a certain size, larger or smaller than its actual size, and am often surprised when I see the image in scale.

I really like this version. The colors are just perfect for it this time, and the textures/collagey bits on the ends of the wings are great.

Your use and mixing of acrylic paint astounds me. I have a very difficult time with acrylics and prefer oils since I can't seem to get it to mix smoothly (color gradients, etc).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SethFitts In reply to pandalemur [2011-07-29 14:21:07 +0000 UTC]

The brand of paint and the colors seem to make a difference. Oils do allow for longer working time. For those who want to change to acrylics but don't like the short working time, there is a retarder which slows the drying time and Golden Acrylics makes an Open Air acrylic which has a slower drying time.
I build up layers when applying acrylics and use synthetic hair brushes and soft natural hair brushes. I use some hog bristle which I have softened a bit with a conditioning soap.

pandalemur In reply to SethFitts [2011-07-30 13:00:37 +0000 UTC]

I suppose that would make sense.. I never had much opportunity to paint with Golden Acrylics before moving on to oils. I didn't know that they made an acrylic with a slower dry time though. I might have to look into it if our budget has a little wiggle room. Thanks for the tip.

In the techniques I've been using for oil painting, I prefer the synthetic hair brushes myself, for detail/line work; more commonly over the past few years, I just get in there with a rag and a palette knife.

If you already have acrylics the Retarder would be a less expensive venture. It still dries faster than oils curing within a couple days.

I really like the colors in this one. They give it a dreamy, glowing, "morning field" sort of feeling. I also like how the color of the bird meshes with the scheme, and yet stands out against the greens.

The patterns you made on the wing are so nice!

Ordinarily, I like to full view, but it looks even nicer from a farther perspective.

SethFitts In reply to fruitbeverage [2010-07-28 18:04:18 +0000 UTC]

And even better in person.
It's difficult to get a good perspective on this. I think the "normal" view allows us to see the patterns and textures come together to make shape and movement.
Thank you!!!

Nice! Is the mixed media adding a bit of complexity new for you? Or have I just missed it before? I love the newsprint. Perfect choice. Beautiful.

SethFitts In reply to 3-legged-dog [2010-07-23 01:02:43 +0000 UTC]

I think I am gradually using more and more mixed media techniques with new piece (especially larger pieces).

exquisiteoath [2010-07-21 14:28:34 +0000 UTC]

Looking at the page collage in the wing I suspected it may be larger than I first believed but seeing it in scale really changes my perception of it.

There's something about this that feels very much the way that colour field paintings feel. I'm not sure fi that makes sense to someone who hasn't seen them in the flesh but they become interesting as you remove colour and end up lost in the texture and story of the brush work.

There's an element of that here, but you've managed to incorporate imagery and colour and narrative into the painting as well.
