They stared at one another for the longest time, his pained breaths drawn in as controlled as his will could muster … there was nearly nothing left to hold him together … her eyes pleaded desperately with his … he hesitated then dropped his gaze to the tiles …

‘What is it Granger … what do you want from me …’

Hermione inhaled sharply …

‘Will you please just let me in …?’

Severus withdrew from the doorway allowing her to enter … He faded into the semidarkness … she followed in silence - pulling the door shut behind her …

It took a moment for her eyes to adjust ... Severus stood facing away from her at the center of the room ... she steped up behind him ... he began to crumple to the floor ... she caught hold of him somehow easing his fall ... everything she was about to say washed away on the tide of panic which now gripped her ... he was on fire and she new she was to blame for it ...

'Oh Severus ...'

'You should not have come here ...'

He whispered softly before closing his eyes ...

Hermione burried her face in his shoulder ... she began to sob ... what a terrible nightmare she had unleashed upon them both ...
