Description Higurashi's been on my mind a lot lately. I actually did watch the series (I admit I skipped two arcs), and ever since Oyashiro-sama was revealed, I felt like drawing my own version of him. In the anime Oyashiro-sama is shown as big Buddha-like saint statue, or Hanyô's said to be one of his aspects. These were quite, well, lame in my mind, so instead I drew how I imagined Oyashiro-sama to be.

And here he is; as the mythical, dark and feared god, more an oni-like demon than human, equipped with weapon for the sacrifices he took and to punish those who dare to break his rules of advice. The wings on his back were inspired by the higurashi, so their in-line design ref was taken from a cicada's wing.

And since I simply suck at drawing mirror image I had to copy.paste the other wing, which caused some complications. I hope it won't mind anyone else besides me ^^"

Hi there!
Thanks for featuring one of my old artworks! Haha, I'd forgotten this one! Reminds me that I need to re-do it sometime. ^^

But yeah, your comment is accurate and hilarious! Who'd have thought that the real Oyashiro-sama is a cinnamon roll?

Nice, I always thought of Oyashiro as an eldritch horror type entity.

That's because this is my version of him as his "true form", as I've explained in the box. Also, pagan deities have been sanctified and made more likeable to look like in later generations, so that they will seem more benign to the people of those later generations. So it wouldn't be strange if the deity's older looks and newer looks in art would look completely different.
Still, this is just how I imagine he might look if he had a real true form. Others might have different views and versions of him, which is cool. Artist's freedom in imagination.

I have seen all three seasons. And Hanyô is not what Oyashiro-sama is. And as I have stated before (and in the artist's comments), this is just how I envision him.

Thanks ^^ Aw, I'm sure you'll find some time to watch it. I actually have some working links I could send you, or you might wanna try BitTorrent (as I recall, you didn't like watching it from PC screen but Tv scren instead ^^"). Both seasons should be able to be found like that

cool ^^ generally green and red doesnt go along well with each other in my opinion but you manage to make it work great in this pic ^^ i like his demonic machete-thingy and his horns especially ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Selene-Eclipse In reply to Nordic-Dragon [2008-12-07 20:41:44 +0000 UTC]

Strange, I've always found that red and green go especially well with each other ^^" Usually I end up using black and red combination, but Oyashiro-sama being older deity, I thought the more "rural" colours would fit him better.
Heh, thanks ^^ The hatchet is actually a small homage to Higurashi-series overall and especially to Rena's chosen weapon (she uses a cleaver often). And the horns were a must for a demonic being ^^"

hehe, ok. from our colour lessions. we learned that if you mix certain colors (at least when painting with oil) youll just get a crappy brown/grey thingy. but thats when coloring at least.

And though I know the truth behind Oyashiro-sama, I still find him interesting a deity

I am far behind these series. I remember watching anything I can get my eyes on, but Television is dead to me. So many lousy shows now a days, I lost my motivation :B

-Sigh- there's the internet, but now I've found myself to be even more busy than ever.

Selene-Eclipse In reply to TomorrowsArchon [2008-12-07 20:35:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, a bit same problem here. University takes most time now, even during frickin' holidays. The only times I get to watch TV is during evenings, and even then I barely look at any programs.

Lucky for me I could watch Higurashi from the internet. Beats all the lousy tv-series anyday.

Honestly, I'm not so sure about careers. Some older people wish they were us, but I see it more fit to freedom, at least compared to this. The positives that come to mind is that a career you have has a daily routine, and unlike school, you would know what to do before time and you don't need to learn anything anymore.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Selene-Eclipse In reply to TomorrowsArchon [2008-12-09 13:49:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, you actually get to learn multiple things even when you do have a permanent career, since such things are demanded at times when something changes at work. Even the daily routines may vary. But it's true that it gives a certain routine which stays somewhat the same, and can give a sort of stability which comforts you to know where you make your living.
Take the time with career choices and choose the one most fitting for you. It might take time, but it'll all come in time. No need to rush, since once you find the career fitting for you, you'll know it. Don't stress about it too much

Yeah, I won't. But gah, being a teacher! The irony of it all! The more things are sought through out, the more I need to study, just so I can teach. That's why History is definitely the immortal subject in schools.
