What is A Flock of Ravens?

I finally finished this stupid thing

This was one of those pictures where I was really excited and happy about being able to draw something intricate, but I was also really unhappy about having to waste 3-4 weeks on it >_< I don't really have a long attention span, so I try to avoid this type of complicated stuff. Then again, it's nice to do something large-scale every now and then so people don't think I'm a lazy bum Part of the floral border is recycled from an older piece--stfu I still had to re-ink the whole thing >_<;;

I remember when my dad walked in the room while I was still coloring stuff and he asked me what the picture meant. I just sorta looked at him blankly asked "Why? Does it matter?" There isn't really any deeper meaning to this or any of the other stuff I draw; it's simply my two characters (Nell and Fallyn) from A Flock of Ravens sitting beneath two statues and some crazy floral border. I always draw my female characters in spiffy 18th century dresses and I had a terrible urge to draw statues (blame my art history class >O> ) and the flowers are there because I like drawing them...? Since when does everything have to have some special meaning? Though I guess it does connect a little with the Dargaard song, which is where I got the title from. You are right - art doesn't always have to have a meaning for people to love and admire it. Sometimes when you look at a painting you get a lot of feelings just by looking at it and loving it. That is the way I feel about this piece. I don't get a particular meaning from it, but still it fills me with a lot of emotions.

This piece is just a wonder to look at. All those details. Your work has really paid off. I simply love the crazy floral border and the two statues.

the details are to die for
I generally don't like the faces in your drawings, but this time I must say that I like almost everything here. you have to be an unbelievably patient person. I especially like how you did the statues, they're drawn in a beautiful style. you definately didn't waste these weeks ; )

hope to see more drawings like thos one ^^

Seitou In reply to Anako-ART [2008-07-08 04:31:59 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad to hear I didn't waste those weeks And any critique on the faces would be helpful, since people always point out that they look odd. I dunno why though D: Maybe it's just a style thing? Because I'm not going for straight-up manga. I've been trying to blend manga and western animation styles for a while (making the noses and mouths more prominent), but I have no clue if it's working...

Anako-ART In reply to Seitou [2008-07-08 10:03:02 +0000 UTC]

hm... I looked through your gallery, and I think that the "problem" lies not in the style itself, but in technical aspects. the eyes, the noses and the lips - they, in my opinion of course, are just too big as for such faces. for example, in this drawing - the statues have smaller eyes than the characters and it makes them look more delicate... also, I think that the eyelashes in your style are too strong and too long, and the lines in lips and noses - too thick. so, tu sum up - smaller and weaker face elements will make the weird feeling go away, because everything besides is faultless. ;D
It's of course my personal opinion. I know how hard it is to make drawings not to look like manga, or rather to make people stop saying that it is manga... so I understand your situation perfectly

I hope I helped : )

Seitou In reply to Anako-ART [2008-07-08 14:59:29 +0000 UTC]

That helps a lot I never would've guessed that the eyelashes were too long *has probably been looking at too much of Ohkami's artwork*

Your paragraph in your description (about pictures having a meaning)...I agree with you 100%! I don't get why some people believe that there has to be a meaning behind everything (like art & literature). It's like they want to tear apart everything & analyze it. (I'm an English major & in my literature classes, it drives me up the wall when these people try to sound so smart by trying to describe the "real meaning" behind a novel or play.) It's the same with artwork. I remember going to the Norton-Simon Art Museum (in Pasadena, CA) and this guy was looking a painting and going, "Oh, I can tell by the way the artist did those strokes that it symbolizes blahblahblah and the way the light reflects in the water is blahblahblah". I was thinking, "C'mon...you're getting in over your head. If the artist wanted to paint a lake, he just did...there is no "meaning" behind it." Or people ask, "Who is it?" It's nobody...just a random design for the most part (except for my OC for my stories). When I draw, there is no hidden meaning or representation behind it...I draw what I feel like.

Well, phew, that was kind of long. But I just had to say I agree with you.

Anyway...wow...I totally this, it is absolutely gorgeous. The details in this are absolutely stunning. The two ladies are graceful & have such beautiful dresses. I also love how you drew the statues, especially with the shading. And of course the flowers are elegant!

I'm and English major as well, and all my professors do the same exact thing! I can understand that some things in art and literature are symbolic, but not every single thing has to have a deeper meaning DD: I remember one of my friends in a Lits class was talking about how an author came into one of her other classes to talk about a book and her professor kept asking about all the symbolism; the author was completely lost People today read too much into everything. Though sometimes it's fun to see what crazy interpretations people come up with.
