Description The Salar de Uyuni was once at the bottom of an inland sea that covered most of the Bolivian Altiplano. When it evaporated during the last ice age, it left behind the Salares de Uyuni and Coipasa, as well as several brackish lakes and smaller salt flats. As well as being a major source of, um, salt, the Salar was recently discovered to contain the world's largest reserves of Lithium, by far larger than those in Chile and the United States. As of now the mines are largely experimental, but are expected to be fully functional in 2011. The government has to move carefully, though, in order to respect both local desires, and the ecosystem of the Salar.
These geometric patterns are some of many formed by the drying salt. There are hexagons in some areas, pentagons in others, and one area where the salt has crystallized into rose formations (unfortunately, I didn't get to see that...).

Nice shot and I'm sure you enjoyed walking around there. I hiked Death Valley to the lowest spot and the way the shapes, ridges and textures would keep changing was amazing. You can find a few pics in my landscape gallery if interested.

Reminds me of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. I think this would look good in B&W, too, with the strong contrasts. I would brighten it up a little bit, though, seems slightly underexposed to me.

You know, I think you're right, it is a little underexposed. I'll probably update it later, but I'm too lazy at the moment. In the meantime you can just brighten your monitor, that usually solves problems for me
I tried black and white, and I like it, but I really like the strong blue of the sky on the white salt.

It's amazing. Especially the desolation of the ground compared with the beauty of the sky.
