It had been a slightly subdued morning without Rico. Nora had been wonderful with Cavan in a quieter mood, offering all the support he needed as they ate and sorted out the horses. Ridge was having a quiet day, but Sherry was competing so she got a very thorough groom. The mare equally seemed aware of Cavan's mood and was extra affectionate as he worked to get her looking perfect. She got him chuckling as she groomed him in return and he had a very genuine smile when they headed out to the warmup area.
The class was big so there were plenty of other horses around as he got Sherry warming up. She was very excited to be back out at an event, and was very sharp to all of the maneuvers Cavan put her through to get her supple and listening to him. It didn't involve jumping which she loved, and he felt some regret for not entering her in both classes, but it was her first event back and he hadn't wanted to push her too hard. And honestly, if he had already had a class with her he probably would have opted out of this madness.
Going top speed down a huge hill with minimal tack. It was definitely madness, but the kind of madness that Cavan loved. Nothing tested the trust and communication between horse and rider like facing the extremes together. Building that bond was what Cavan loved the most about riding, and the connection he had with Sherry was unique. The chance to show that here, in a location so similar to her home range was something he had been very excited about.
But that was when he had been well rested and focused. Now he found himself hoping that he would not get in her way.
He was lost in his thought as they rode up to the start alone. Sherry was at ease in the environment, ears pricked as she picked her way up the trail. She ignored the other horses on the way up, and Cavan was thankful for the break from the busy warmup ring. Sherry was always rather antisocial with other horses, stallions in particular, so the chaos of large groups and close quarters was normally a less than pleasant experience for her. So the peace and quiet of the walk up was a good chance to let her relax again. Sadly that relaxation did not last one they arrived at the top.
While Cavan was excited to see Lyo, Sherry was distinctly displeased by a very familiar face that awaited them. Basterd had been an annoying stallion from her early years in the mountains and their repeated interactions had continued to be tense. The stallions flirty nature causing her ears to pin as she gave him a warning look as Nora stepped in between them to create some space. She was familiar to both horses and experienced with hot tempter thoroughbreds, but Cavan couldn't help but worry that a stray kick or movement would injure her.
Sherry had gotten far more comfortable the more time she spent around Nora, but she was still rather particular about who she liked near her. Nora had attained the level of acceptable company, but still, Cavan didn't want to push that. So he quickly wished the Captain luck with promises of a strong drink at the bottom regardless of how they made it to the finish, then turned Sherry away to circle and move around the waiting area until they were called to take their turn.
