Description: One of the most lifeless places on Earth is the northern part of the Midwestern American Desert. Barely any life lives here, but the animals and plants that do live here are highly specialized. The second-biggest animal that lives in the cold deserts is the Greater woolly turkey. This descendent of the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) has evolved to be a generalist omnivore. It also has multiple different adaptations for the cold climate of the northern Midwestern American Desert.
The most notable feature of these large birds is the sexual dimorphism between the males and the females. The males are much bigger compared to the females, being about three to four times heavier. There is also a small red crest of feathers on the top of its head. These adaptations are both used in sexual selection for selecting the best male. Another adaptation is the thick feathers that cover these birds. The feathers allow them to keep heat in and stay warm during the cold months of the year.
One of the most useful adaptations that they have is their wide feet. These large feet help them travel along the icy terrain of the desert. This adaptation is especially great during their migration down to the Southern part of the world. During the winter months, the Northern part becomes extremely cold, so cold that almost no life can live there. So, most animals will migrate to the middle part of the desert. This part is quite cold, but it’s more livable than the north during winter.
