I discovered the most amazing site in the world, COLOURlovers and proceeded to browse through their archives.
I had originally just been after some sort of background-esque thing to do, as I had used the original colours of the base image. However, after finding a particular palette I like [Love's Labor , by shellybear665 ], I decided to change the colour of everything [except the eyes] to the five colours...
...And this is the result. I was going to use the grey for the skin, and it looked decent, but the hair...wasn't working.
The pattern in the background is Grateful Estate by manekineko .
I'll most likely revisit this image later, when I attempt a proper "vectoring", with shading and all.
