When I see the Eros Statue in Piccadilly it brings me back to an amazing time in my life and reminds me of a special love, but not the kind of love you think… it’s not about punk rock couples hanging out near the fountain, it’s not about a young couple of art students… It’s not even about a couple or that kind of love… it’s about the love between two brothers, the love between a Mom and her son, the love of a family or what was left of one.
My Dad died when I was 19 and my brother was 17… the house got lonely and quiet fast. Not just because Dad was gone, but the following year my brother went off to College in Washington DC. It was just my Mom and I in New Jersey, very sad and missing both of them. My brother was going to school to be a linguist and had to do 1 year abroad, so he lived in Seville his 3rd year. He got sick while in Spain, very sick and we wanted to help, but neither my Mom or I speak Spanish and we wanted him to get better doctors, so I came up with the idea to meet in London. We didn’t have passports so we had to contact the U.S. Congressman in our district to get emergency passports. We drove to Philadelphia (an hour away) to get the passports, booked our first International flight (My Mom’s 1st plane ride and my second) and within less than a week we were airborne headed for Great Britain.
We landed and took a taxi to our hotel on Grosvenor Square. It was late, after midnight when we got there. I tried to wait up for my brother, we hadn’t seen him in six months, but I fell asleep on the bed. I was out cold when I heard his voice, jumped up and hugged him. My Mom hugged us both and the three of us stood there just hugging. The next two weeks we lived in that hotel room and got my brother to doctors and explored London in between. He had lost lots of weight so once we got the right medicine; we kept trying to feed him. It was Christmas and we celebrated there. It was magical, but one of our favorite things was the two of us would walk from our hotel to Piccadilly and Trafalgar. My brother and I would walk and talk. We discovered London, but we discovered ourselves again and always trying to fill the hole inside us that wished our Dad was there with us.
It was New Years Eve, we didn’t have plans and back home when Dad was alive we would celebrate by cooking a great meal; drinking champagne and watching the ball drop, singing songs and celebrating in our living room. We couldn’t cook in our Marriott room so we decided to buy all different types of food from places we had found and buy some great bottles of champagne. My brother and I walked from the hotel to Piccadilly and as he went into a store to get some amazing fish and chips I sat at the base of the Eros Statue. I was thinking about my Dad, how we got there, my family, my life…. and looking up at this famous statue, one I had seen only in pictures at this point… well…. Everything was gonna be okay. We all loved each other. We had told my Dad the night before he died that we loved him. We flew thousands of miles because we loved each other and looking up at Eros…. It all made sense. My brother and I walked back to the hotel and for the first time since my Dad left us… it all made sense. We loved each other, the way a family should and nothing would ever stop that.
So now when I see pictures of Eros or Piccadilly or Trafalgar… I’m brought back to that special New Years Eve on the streets of London walking with my brother, my best friend and it makes me smile… like I’m doing right now.
