Most things are done verbatim here. My favourite part's the beaded ponytail.
I think it isn't water type for the same reason gyarados isn't dragon: water/dragon would have been way too cheap for the first gen. That rule was lifted after there came to be damaging dragon moves.

LOL, It was too obvious that Gyarados should be Dragon type! But later they ended making a Dragon/Water pokΓ©mon... It was only a matter of time (and space)!

Dratini and Dragonair are based on Asian dragon, but Dragonite is based on European dragon. Makes NO sense.

Thay may be true, though I still see Dratini and Dragonair more like Eels (you even have to fish to get one in the first games)... the chinese Dragon I think is more Rayquaza...
