Britain does have many lovely places, there are even some quite local to where I am but we're currently in the grey-wet-meh stage of the year so nothing really looks it's best. And we've not had snow/ice like that for some years now.

our weather has been so odd this year.......lots of rain this summer...causing floods.......then this winter we just had some tornados!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Caedesdeo In reply to SauriaMami [2008-01-09 16:45:42 +0000 UTC]

Tornados?! Good grief. We had flooding this summer as well, one of the worst hit places although fortunately we're halfway up a large hill so didn't get too badly affected. No true summer to speak of, and a rather meh winter. A few millimetres of patchy snow on one day so far but that's it.
(Just realised, long message about the weather. Very )

lol...i love weather! we had massive floods this summer as well...now record snow falls....ice storms...and NOW tornadoes! has been a very moody year! but? means more mushrooms come spring to see!

Yeah, one advantage of the wet over here is some spectacular fungi on old trees. One thing I miss that we don't get much here are spectacular thunder storms, with lightning crashing around you. The best one I've ever been in was in Germany, some years back.

here in our summers...when the corn and wheat is almost ready to harvest we'll get some incredible storms as well. the sky turns almost green and the lightening is actually purple! i was a kid and once saw lightening shooting inside a rainbow arch....was like it was tunneling it or something.

That sounds absolutely gorgeous. We've more in the way of sheep fields round here, although we're only a short way from the Pennines so it's a bleak beauty more than anything.

i almost prefer the quieter to the more extravegant........i love sheep!

Caedesdeo In reply to SauriaMami [2008-01-11 15:55:27 +0000 UTC]

I love travelling through the penines, especially when they're snow dusted instead of covered-the scattering of white seems to highlight and enhance all the crags and contours of the rock and moorland, it's esoecially striking when you emerge into it from a train tunnel.

And sheep...well, it's unnerving when you realise one is stood above you due to a quirk in the local architecture and is eyeballing you. Sheep can be unexpectadly menacing just by standing there.

hehe...it's the interesting eyes they have. hehe
and agreed about the dusting of snow........helps to show off what has been covered by foliage in the spring/summer/fall.........

Caedesdeo In reply to SauriaMami [2008-01-13 23:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they have those odd pupils the same as goats. But there is just something slightly unnerving about being loomed over by a herbivorous creature covered in wool.

It does, although the penines run more to heather fern and grass with the odd stark tree than anything else. What's the area around you like?

SauriaMami In reply to Caedesdeo [2008-01-15 03:08:28 +0000 UTC]

my area is mostly flat farming land...corn and wheat ...some beans or tobacco. we have small wooded patches that i'm constantly tramping around in.......lots of creeks and one of the US's largest rivers right down the road from me. right now we're frozen...some snow/ice.......the creeks are finally down so i've been hiking up them for fossils and neat rocks to add to my over-flowing rock garden....

Fossils? Neat! We're technically semi-urbanised, but a half hour walk out will have you by the huge dam which was recently done up so there's a path around most of it and the whole surrounding area is partially-wooded farm land. Mostly livestock, the occasional field of wheat or cabbages. And the current forcast is wet, with a side order of soggy.

haha...'wet with a side order of soggy'....that's great. i had to go today back to my fossil bed since we're getting snow tonight and all day tomorrow.......

The nearest place to us that has fossils that I can think of is Whitby, or Robin Hood's bay which are both coastal whereas we're inland. The only thing they used to dig up around us was gannister, a type of clay (or sandstone, definitions vary) which they mined out of the area and used in the steel making process.

ahhhh.....where i find my fossils and teeth at there are several different layers of rock...from slate to limestone to a conglomerate and even an almost claylike type.......u can stand and count 9 different layers of rock types in one area alone....
