Description My people tell the story of Coyote and the Moon. Coyote was alone again, his wife having left him for another, and was sitting by a pond. His heart was heavy and he could not feel the mischief he usually did. So Coyote called to the Sky Father, and said, "Father, I cannot find my spirit. I cannot serve as I have been made, help your child!"

The Sky Father did not answer him, but Umusequa, the Moon did. "Coyote, beautiful teacher, why do you cry?"

Coyote responded, "My heart is full of sorrow, my love as chosen another."

To which the Moon asked, "Why does this hurt you? It is as a free heart should be." She looked at him, and saw that his heart was not free. She asked, "Why is your heart still chained?"

Coyote answered, "Everyone who I have loved has some of it. All who are my brothers and sisters and lovers are part of that chain."

This touched the Moon, and made her sad. She said, "Come Coyote, give me a piece of your heart that I may protect it from hurt."

The wise teacher saw in her face she was determined. But that she could not love him. He knew she would always care, but never love him. So he said this, "You are beautiful, and you are pure, but I can give you something more than my heart. I give you my magic, the song of my loneliness and power."

She was shocked, and withdrew from him, and as his heart lost another thread, one of love not in marriage, or in flesh, but of spirit, he knew he would find his mischief again.

And so, when the Moon stands strong and full in the sky, Coyote, wise teacher, sorrowful trickster, sings his songs to her, and gives her his power, and accepts her light as his gift from her.

This is why the Coyote cries to the moon, not for his own heart, but for hers.

Finally I have no to-do list hehe
This picture is for my dear friend who has helped me realize that I'm worth it c: He's truly someone I want to keep around forever. He told me that anecdote since he is a part of a Native American tribe called the Lakota and his spiritual teacher is the Coyote.

I absolutely love the colors and textures here.  The white gold light coming off of that moon is very compelling.

This is such an amazing illustration with a beautiful back story, but my first thought when I saw the thumbnail was that I would have titled it, "Eat Moon" |D
