Description Commission for . Amaterasu leaping with Solar Flare.

After I finished painting Ammy, I realized I needed something else to fill the extra space and provide a little extra something. Calligraphy, I thought--a delicate art, but I felt it was needed. I practiced that inscription so many times before painting it--I was so nervous. XP It reads eikรด ni michita ร”kami Amaterasu, or "Glorious Great God Amaterasu".

Sumi ink and watercolors. I finally got to use my new weasel hair brush. Having a real stiff brush made those little lines so much easier.~

Do you adjust the painting to accommodate the folds of the paper (so it looks "normal" when viewed straight-on)? It looks like you did, but I'm not sure. It is very well done!

I do subconsciously, I guess, but usually I'm not thinking about that, just making it look right. Unless I'm drawing at a poor angle, and then I have to redraw parts to compensate for squishing or stretching on one axis.

Thank you!

While I think that all the fans in your gallery are amazing, this is my personal favourite. There's something about the details that went into the flames and fur that sets this fan apart. This really needs to be part of the lineup of Okami's official merchandise. Fantastic work!

The reason I started painting fans in the first place was because Capcom Japan had that limited edition Okami fan that was rare and inordinately expensive on Ebay, so I wanted my own. So for you to say that means so much to me. Thank you.

I think my favorite thing about this fan is its simplicity. I usually go overboard on something or other when I draw/paint (like the leaves and fire, for instance), but here I seemed to find a balance between detail and a certain matter-of-fact-ness which I hope I will be able to reproduce in future fans.

Anyways AWESOME job.

It's a pretty basic process... pencil sketch, ink, erase pencil, paint.

Thank you very much. <3

The calligraphy was definitely a good choice as well, it adds quite a lot and it nicely balances the fan.

Thank you! This is definitely one of my personal best fans as well. Some of the newer techniques I tried worked out really well (so did that new brush), I think, and I'm itching to make some new ones now, perhaps this weekend.

Amazing! I have a Japanese calligraphy kit, but can't use it worth a darn... yet. I'm hoping I'll get some of the proper parchment and be able to practice. But... yeah, this is great.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SarurunKamui In reply to kitatora [2012-02-14 05:19:31 +0000 UTC]

Eh, you don't really need the parchment, just some smooth paper that holds water well. I have a pack of gasenshi and rarely use it... maybe I should, though, and just do some calligraphy sometime... I really enjoy it. It's very relaxing, even if it's hard.

The brushes do take a while to get used to, but once you do they're wonderful. I don't know what kind of kit you have, but it helps to have a variety of stiffnesses. That probably matters even more than size for sumi brushes.

Thank you!

kitatora In reply to SarurunKamui [2012-02-14 05:22:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see... yeah, I figured. The best I have is printer paper right now, actually... XD which kinda sucks. I'm still trying to get used to how I'm supposed to hold the brush . As of right now, I've only got two brushes... one bigger one, and one smaller one. When I get more into calligraphy, I'll see about expanding that and getting some new ink sticks.

And you're quite welcome!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SarurunKamui In reply to kitatora [2012-02-14 05:40:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, no need to get all the supplies at once... thankfully, Chinese/Japanese painting supplies tend to be cheaper than most Western analogues, but I think it's the tendency of Asian painters to collect supplies for aesthetic value, so it probably works out about the same. XD Ink sticks are really fun, but I only have a few cheap ones. (I really ought to use them more, though. Honestly, my favorite calligraphy implement is the ink stone...)

Your fans are so darn pretty! : D I have the one I got from you - and a bigger one with tigers on it from a store in the city. I like the one from you better. :3 They're so unique and pretty. <3 And durable - the one you gave me seems to be stronger than the one I bought!

Your welcome! And yes - they don't even dent really. I mean - I think you'd have to try on purpose to hurt the ones that you make. But like the one I bought has a couple of crinkles and stuff - almost like it's going to fall apart even though I have done nothing bad to it. xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SarurunKamui In reply to RzSumisu [2012-02-13 23:43:05 +0000 UTC]

Heh. Well, that's why I started buying these instead of the bigger white ones I used to use. The size was nice, but they were really cheaply made and I felt bad selling them to people. These darker ones are fantastic, though.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

RzSumisu In reply to SarurunKamui [2012-02-13 23:55:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh really? The one I bought is bigger as well! But I like the size you have now because it is perfect for carrying around. Like the other is probably better for like wall hanging and stuff but the smaller is definitaly better for more practical use and such~

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

SarurunKamui In reply to RzSumisu [2012-02-14 00:51:09 +0000 UTC]

That's what I like about the smaller ones. I know a lot of people put them on their walls anyway, but I love functional art.~
