Description This map shows the continent of Drovia and the Celesian Empire on the planet Terrneva, 2870 years after the colonial transport MIMAS crashed down on the planet (after being pulled into an unknown region of space by a unknown hyperspace effect).
The freight of the MIMAS consisted of: 300.000 colonists including material and animals bound for planet Roma Nova (Roman Revivalists/low level tech), 40.000 colonists bound for planet Triibaaldii (Inventive Creativists) and 15.000 frozen specimen of recreated sauroids including 40 persons of scientific staff bound four planet Crichton's Vision.
After loosing modern technology (which the Roman Revivalists didn't have too much anyway) civilization rose again and the Celesians (descendants of a group of the Roman Revivalists) built the largest empire on the planet. The actual level of technology is comparable to mid 16th century Terran Standard Calendar. Language is a bastardized form of Latin.

I hope I met the theme of the September challenge good enough.

The pictures of the ships and dinosaurs I took from Wikipedia, everything else is my creation. Mountains and trees are brushes I found here in the resources thread on www.cartographersguild.com.

EDIT: Placed dates of colonization and conquest on the map

The landmasses of this planet have an uncanny resemblance to Greece and the Aegeian.

I DEFINITELY see Crete in the southern portion of the map, but who cares? It's still an awesome map!

Once again, it's ridiculously beautiful. Are you working mostly with vectors or raster imaging?

Thanks.
I start usually with a vector drawn map and add the effects in PS. Labeling I do strictly with a vector program, either Inkscape or - with many labels - Illustrator.

Why don't you do labels with Photoshop? After all, texts are sort-of vectors there, and you can make them follow vector shapes.

I think it's easier to work with a vector program. That's at least my experience when it comes to heavy and dense labeling.

Fair enough. I might try that someday as well.

If I not mistaken (it's been some time since I did labels in PS) PS creates an object for every word. This makes the layer panel very soon very packed until you rasterize the objects and join them in one layer, but then you can't edit a single word any longer without deleting it and typing a new one. That's why I use vector. Of course this means you have to finish the map before in PS, if you don't do a vector map.

That's right. What I do is group the text layers into batches according to what the labels represent. E.g. in my latest map (Magic in Britain), I had text layer groups for Leylines, Hubs, Covens, Cities and Zones, as well as a layer group for the Legend. It does help a lot.

Hm. Have to try it. I'll hope to start with my map today and I could use your way.

Actually, I have already started drawing, but it seems as I will finish the whole map in Illustrator. As the actual round is full of pictures on most of the maps I'll draw some funny guys in the next days. The concept drawings with pencil look good so far, I hope I can transfer this to digital.

Are you using a tablet when drawing? Or are you going to transfer the drawings by scanning them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sapiento In reply to Laiqua-lasse [2009-09-16 04:36:44 +0000 UTC]

I scanned them and used the scan as template for the digital drawing (I did some pictures yesterday evening). That's what I usually do when drawing persons and more complicated technical designs like my steam tanks (here the concepts were rather raw, more a guide than a template).

Very cool, what happened to the Creativists?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sapiento In reply to Neethis [2009-09-12 09:24:07 +0000 UTC]

They settled on the island of Kendas and were conquered by the Empire nearly 400 years before the actual date.
