Description Full title is:-

He then realised his material harvest ... dreams became nightmares.

Sorry about the crappy photo ... A2 size, HB and 2B pencils on heavy weight cartridge paper that really didn't stand up to the eraser too well ... few bits I'm not happy with so critique away if you feel like it ... especially around composition

Its really about that moment you realise that what you thought was great is actually not very good at all ... it's the moment before your brain has a chance to find the words 'Oh SH*T' ...

Still amazes me, this is quintessential Hunter. I was just thinking, (I still can't log into RR, it's been years, email issue, long story...anyway,) when I see this it always reminds me that I'm in good company here.

"the visage of success crumbles to become merely a mirror of failure" - could have been another title... think that's a quite from a book but not 100% sure which one. think it was by Keats or Byron... but really am not sure.

Yes, anyhow - the work itself... a good strong piece. The details are crisp and tidy, and the process of getting it squished into the digital realm hasn't been too unkind to it.

I think

If there's one point I would make (again this may be down to the trauma of it getting squashed into digital)... I feel there could be more definition of depth in there
maybe more 'dunes' getting more an more faded in the distance or something like that.. something that suggests a little more of the isolation of that moment.

On a more positive note (still loving the piece though got to honest) the blankness of the sky does
convey that awful 'white room no way out' sensation of this moment very well indeed... reducing the struggles to escape from the inevitable fate into a somewhat morbidly black comedy & pathos.

I still think it is a very powerful work that connects well with many viewer's own experiences of life's hard destinies... blunted only slightly by an attenuated depth (which again might just be the digital thing).

Fave'd

Now that is what I call a great comment ... Thank you very much for taking the time and being so thoughtful!

As it is A2, the scanning and digital squishing, as you say has lost some detail but to be honest, it is as fair a representation of it as it can be ... so what you say is very relevant. I agree ... It does lack depth. I think I could have improved this on the left hand side ... where there is room to recede into a distance ... something I could fix if I turn this into a painting.

There are a few other problems that I would fix ... like the triteness of the left-hand bottom area, and perhaps a few radial rays of gooness to lead the eye around and back, rather than the very vertical and static feel it has at the moment.

I love the reference you make to black comedy ... it was part of my initial idea ... another title I was going to give it was "Be careful what you wish for, it may just come true."

Thank you again for this wonderful critique ... it is very much appreciated!

No worries, I know it's always nice to receive the usual "that's really good - awesome", but this kind of thing is a bit like candy for the ego.... yes it's enjoyable,; ultimately it ends up doing very little good at all.
Glad that I picked up on actual references to what you had wanted to be there too (the black comedy thing)... this is usually a healthy indication of an effective piece, as art above all should surely communicate and express.
