It actually took me a while to warm up to the Shinning and Cadence, they appeared to me at first the embodiment of male and female (respectivly) fanfic power fantasies, though I read a few fanfics (action stuff mostly, My Little Praetor, Courage and Honor and Friendship) featuring them and their later appearances in show did make me like them a lot

They both bothered me a little at first, too. Though, I think I was more bothered by the fact Twilight had a big brother all that time...And it was never brought up once. For someone that's a big part of her life, he was just non-existent. I get that the big bosses were making them do the episode to sell toys, but couldn't we at least have an episode before hand that established him? Maybe even if Twilight and him shared letters, and he was just referenced that way for a couple of episodes. That would have been SOMEthing.
Cadence didn't bother me as much...Besides the fact we had an established canon that Celestia and Luna were the only alicorns. And then POOF! Random new goddess princess. But besides that, I didn't really care. I was mostly too busy digging Queen Chrysalis and the changlings. XD
