post work is the real magic where the real talent begins to fly. The 3D portion is merely the launching pad, never perfect and always needs fixing, correcting in post.

some people are just too narrow minded for words - they really have no clue they're missing out on half the art!

okie dokie. So with a non-postworked piece (such as this), absolutely everything is done and rendered within the 3D program being used - in my case that's Daz Studio using it's native render engine, 3Delight. Once it has been rendered, then job done. Nothing is done to change the piece, save perhaps resizing and the addition of a signature, which I have, indeed, done, and nothing else. Now, postwork comes in form of 2D work in programs like PhotoShop and PaintShop (PaintShop being the program I use - just personal preference). Here I do work to compliment the 3D render, like adding additional wisps of hair, or smoke/fire effects, many of the magic effects in my pieces are postworked, either manually drawn or done with brushes. Sometimes there are small mistakes or things that don't render quite right, like a fabric fold is too sharp (sometimes there is absolutely nothing you can do about that within the 3D program) and needs to be smoothed, or the skin tone isn't quite right. There's all kinds of things. Personally, I like adding filters over my pieces to give them a textured look like photos or canvas. I don't NEED to, but I LIKE to. Plus there is all the 2D work that I do to things like the model's skin textures (like tattoos, dirt, wounds, make up, etc...) before it even makes it to the 3D program to be rendered in the first place. I could go on and on, but basically that's the jist when it comes to the difference between the two. Everyone has their own methods and personal preferences, and that's kinda the point, otherwise art would get really boring. Hope that helped

I do postwork myself, but b'vec, isn't it amazing to see such a lovely render done in 3Delight by a member of the DS community, and not a "big guy with big software"!

Very nice! I've been on both sides of the postwork debate, and I can really appreciate your viewpoint that it doesn't matter. The end result is what counts. Photography, now, that's another story, but for 3D? Why not postwork raw renders! You can't take crap and turn it into gold, so there's no reason not to enhance good renders. I will join you in giving a raspberry to any who say otherwise.

thanks for the support! Usually, I ignore twits like that, but he just caught me on the right day. Sigh... Oh well, it doesn't matter, lol. Thank you so much for the kind words!!

Interesting tidbit - Ansel Adams spent, sometimes, days in his darkroom developing his images. That would be "post work" today.
I would have been ticked off too.

You know, I totally get wanting to know whether something was done in 2D or 3D, because that's about understanding process and possibly limits. I often want to know how someone made something. But _photographers_ rely on postwork. As I've run out of time, I've done less and less postwork. My raw renders are less work, not more. Most pro 3D artists I follow do postwork. Actually, AFAIK, _all_ of them postwork finished images.

So sorry to hear some bonehead is giving you a hard time. I think it was Shakespeare who said "Some people are just dicks." You're an awesome artist Vicki! With or without post work, your renders are phenomenal. Referring to post work in digital art as a crutch is like referring to the pillars holding up the parthenon as crutches.
Listen to Shakespeare. He knows.

Vicki, you are an artist who has my admiration. This piece is beautiful, as many others in your gallery. The tools you use to produce your wonderful art are your choice, tools that you master and combine in ways that let your talent flourish in such magnificent ways. Well done, and well said.

Why would some one care? If doing post work is cheating - why isn't using 3D rendering software cheating. So long as you don't misrepresent - it's all fine, right?
Speaking of all fine: WOW! I was sure that was a photograph!
Beautifully done!

You do get utterly ridiculous people in the world, don't you? -_- How... Batshit insane. I am physically struggling to come up with a response because of the sheer lack of logic on his part!!!
It's like saying that a photographer's not doing 'real' photography because he uses different lenses? XD
I could go on and on, but... You were quite right to do this render, because it shows you can produce a masterful image WITHOUT any postwork, and that you do, indeed, have an amazing knowledge of both the program you use, and artistic knowledge; your use of light and shadow is outstanding and plain masterful, and how realistic the materials look show that you have a fantastic grasp of your program. :3
Sooooo...
