- Dark clouds cover the sky. Lightning flashes down from them with a brilliant light, crackling through the sky, twisting, turning, separating into thousands of tiny particles of sizzling electricity and light. They strike the trees, and the leaves begin to smoke despite the steady and strong barrage of raindrops streaming down from the stormy sky. Trees burst into flame, a roaring, hungry fire that devours the leaves. Everything is turned red with the glow of the fire, the flickering, demolishing flames.  -

- This is the cover of Blazing Storm. Currently the first page is not out yet, but give me a watch and you will be notified when it is! -

- Man, this took me forever! I started it Sunday and spent nearly the whole day working on it. From there until today, Thursday, I worked on it for hours every day, in every moment of spare time I had. At one point on Monday, GIMP crashed while I was working on it. I had saved three hours ago and had been working on it about that long since, so I lost three hours of work. But I soon made up for it and surpassed the point where I had been before it crashed. Fun fact: I only used 22 layers. XD Another fun fact: I used GIMP and FireAlpaca to make the logo. I downloaded a template for the logo (credited below), used the color select and eraser tools on GIMP to erase the background so that it was just the outline, then used FireAlpaca's magic wand tool to fill in the color. Then I brought it over to GIMP to add it to the rest. -
- Overall, I had a ton of fun drawing this. It took a ton of effort but it was really worth it. This is like my second time drawing fur detail and I actually don't utterly loathe it that much! I think I improved a ton on my cats, fur, and background things while drawing it. -

That's happened to me a lot before with other artwork. I come to it and I'm thinking "okay, I'll comment on this one! It will be easy to critique and it's really pretty so I can still compliment it" then read the comments and there are already 400 constructive comments on it.

Another ProjectComment 'er.

Everyone else has noted the obvious anatomy so I won't press what you're aware of. I will say that 1. Thank you for not using the GIMP lightning brushes and attempting your own, 2. Your storm clouds do set the mood for the story but your blurring is jarring and stands out in a bad way against the rest of the clouds. 3. Rain, that was touched on but you did get the fur to look clumped which if you had done little rain drops across your feline then it would have really given it that extra punch of amazingness you're trying for in the picture. 4. Flames reflecting in the eyes. Cat's eyes when they are reflecting fire, seen when my cats sit outside as we grill steaks, they have what my sister says is a green-orange reflection that has the light from the flame around the edges of the green. I can't tell due to red-green nature so trust her on that. The eyes should be narrower if the feline is close to the light source but further away you make them larger. 5. The smoke from the fires or at that point smoke/steam would be intermingled and you would need to have the smoke/steam drift in the direction that the rain is falling because the wind would influence that.

Tricks I'm offering to improve the next time you draw scenes like this. Clouds when you do lighting against them, put the airbrush to 5 percent opacity and gently stroke over the cloud and lightning is high energy so it will give some blue/purple lighting so have that around the edges and narrow the white core of your lightning. You did great with the branching off for the bottom half of the lightning, but the "trunk" of the lightning is too thick. Lightning does not have to be consistent in size for when leaving the cloud. It can vary a little and be like what you did at the bottom.  Rain for brushes I'd use a watercolor or a fade in/out feature brush to make the droplets and have the opacity being between 25 to 75 depending on how dense the droplet is or use it to make the rain add depth and distance of background objects. Size wise for each droplet really depends on the size of the canvas but a good one for a basic 1028 X 800 would be 1 to 2 on the brush size.

If you need some symbolism help I can direct you to plenty of reference material to assist in creating amazing covers with hidden meanings behind placements or positioning of characters to basically draw your audience in further. The cover is good and can be improved. Don't give up on that.

I hope the critiques help improve your art because I think you have a bright future of drawing ahead of you!

Thank you for your helpful comment!
The tips on the clouds, rain, and lightning are very helpful, and I will keep them in mind next time I draw something including them!
And also since the angle of the drawing makes it look like the cat is floating, that's why I didn't put rain in front of her. I kinda wanted it to look like she was photoshopped in there. But now that I think of it her clumpy fur does look like it's wet. It's also just because she has long fur.
Again, thank you so much for taking the time to help me!

Totally! I have every book of the series except for a few of the books that are associated with Clan lore, and Thunder and Shadow. And maybe Hawkwing's Journey? I don't remember if it's out yet or not.

Aha! A fellow Warriors fan! And a fellow GIMP user! This is totally my domain (Here from ProjectComment )
I like how you showed the fur's texture. Very well-defined and I can easily tell which way the fur flows. Nicely done.
I'm impressed by the fire effects in the background. It took me too long to figure out how to create a glow from the fire and make it look less like some random orange spikes.
You do have room for improvement regarding anatomy. I know anatomy can be difficult with cats. The right eye is noticeably higher than the left, and because eyes are a focal point, it throws off the rest of the image for the viewer. Cats also don't usually have such a clear distinction between their chest/neck/shoulder/leg fur. I really dislike drawing cat legs because cat legs are the. worst. I know how painful they are to draw. Heck, even using cats as anatomical references from the front don't always help! The level of distinction in this image does seem more fitting for dogs, who have wider chests. Additionally, we can't see the back legs,  (again! I know how hard they are to draw. Cat legs are my pet peeve, no pun intended) but we can see the tail. Usually, at least part of the cat's back legs are visible, unless they have an ungodly fluffy body, in which case, anatomy seems almost thrown out the window.
I do like how you pushed the muzzle downwards instead of having the nose and mouth in the middle of the face (which is what I do, I must confess...) but, unless we're talking grumpy cat, the lines of the mouth curl upwards to make the little bow-shaped muzzle... I can't explain it well enough, but if you look at a picture you'll see what I mean.

Overall, I like the background effects, though it lacks some detail in places, and I like how you drew the fur, but I think you might benefit from studying some pictures of cats and seeing how they fit together.

Your art actually really reminds me of how I drew cats a few years ago, so thanks for that unintended little trip down memory lane

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me a constructive comment!
I struggled a lot on the anatomy for this one, and changed the lines a ton. I ended up just going with this, because it looked better before it was colored XD
Yeah, I actually drew the muzzle too low at first. And thanks for the tip about the mouth, it's really helpful.
Thanks again!! I'll definitely work on what you suggested.

Lol that's funny, and you're welcome XD

Hello, I saw your art on  ProjectComment, so I’ll critique it :>
First off, your colors, I think that for the most part they're nice, but if you changed the hue slightly to one side or another, it would give more impact on what the drawing is trying to convey, for a sad tone: cold colors; for an angry tone: warm colors. Now your anatomy, it's somewhat off, the legs are too far apart, the ears are also too far apart, the head it too big, the forelegs are too far apart, the eyes are a bit sloppy, and it should only show the tip of the tail, and I liked what you did with the muzzle, but I would advise you using a reference. Now the background, it's blurry, I can't really tell much about what's happening, the rain should be seen everywhere in the picture, even in the giant cloud, because it should have another cloud of rain on the sky next to the cat, the rock should have sharp edges, and the tree, it's really hard to see the leaves in the front tree, I would advise putting more contrast, and the cat should be in a darker tone because of the clouds that make shadow, and i saw that you only putted two sticks on almost every trees, I would advise putting more on one and less on another. The grass is going to the right, and the rain drops are going to the left, I would advise fixing it, and if the trees should somewhat be inclined to the left or right. And the cloud, it shouldn't be so huge, I would advise making one big cloud a bunch of smaller ones to make it more natural, but nothing that a reference couldn't fix. But the drawing is pretty; it just needs some improvement :>

Thank you for the critique!! It helps a lot. I will see what I can do to fix this drawing, and take notes on what I can improve on in the future.
Yeah, I had a lot of trouble with the head, I redrew it several times. I'll try to fix it.
Thanks again!
