What about the actual distance from the insect you've been ?

Thanks again, I think I would have been about 150-200mm away. This little fly was far too busy cleaning himself to be bothered with me getting closer and closer. I was laying down with my elbows on the ground which helped to stabilise the camera

I see. Thanks! I have a Sigma, 50mm Macro lens, but it needs a tripod because it has such a low-light entry, and always seems to use long exposures, and doesn't permit hand-held shots. (Unless it's just my inexperience.)

Yes, I always had the same problem either needed a tripod or had to shoot at F/2.8 and have a really shallow depth of field. I have now gotten over my previous hatred of using a flash as you can get hand held shots with a decent depth of field. This shot was taken at 1/200th and f/11

I will try that, and see how I get on. Flash can be a nuisance sometimes, as it often gives a darker picture. I'll have to play with other settings, and see what happens.

I used to hate using flash, with it's really harsh light and the cast shadows, I would never use it but with macro shots I use it more often than not
