What software did you use to get this effect?, I dare say its an effectively accurate toon render!

Maya and its toon shader. it took some tweeking but its a pretty straight forward process. to get it working perfectly would take a lot more fine tuning. this was just to illustrate the feature rather than make it a perfect still.

I see... just curious as I am on a journey to find a way to harness this effect for 3D backgrounds.

well some of the animation reference sheets are floating around. I really cant give you an exact link without floating threw the website for about 20-30 minuets to sift for it but it was found amongst other model sheets at fineart.sk it was one of the few avalible digimon model sheets which included color refrence.
though the site appears to nolonger have the section i downloaded it from they, at one point, had over 3000 anime related reference images.
it had the front side and 3/4 side views of the character in a neutral pose. though they didnt completely match up (which is common in hand drawn illustrations) its better than useing screen captures =3
