Wonderful use of light and perspective. The way the ground blocks out the bright sunshine is very powerful and conveys a distinct sense of burial to the land. The peering, impatient figures above looking down highlighted by the fresh, clean sky are also immediately engaging, and their stance off to the right attracts attention to the emptiness on the left, highlighting both the sky and the pit. The cloud formation is a wonderful touch and implies a sense of impending doom, as if some sort of a mystical storm was coming, creating an atmosphere of hurry and danger whilst adding a lovely bit of vibrancy and diversity to the sky.
The concept of the rock is perhaps even more intriguing, and the empty, muted look on the lower figure's face combined with the earthy, mottled colours wonderfully captures an underground atmosphere. There are so many layers to the painting, from the light to the colour to the texture to the concept; it's truly beautiful, quirky and engaging, all at the same time. There are some things I just can't seem to put a finger on that make this even more amazing. Nevertheless, stunning work!
