Description
Chillstep lay curled around her kits in the twoleg cage, her back to the door. The twolegs had gone off to search for more cats, leaving one in the front of the monster. She just ignored them. She had given up. She was going to be a kittypet and there was nothing she could do. Who knew if the twolegs would even keep her as a pet? What would they even do to her, to her kits?

"Mama!"

The deputy lifted her head the tiniest bit, feeling weary and tired. "Hm?"she asked softly, not wanting to ignore her kits but still extremely upset.

"Don't worry, Mama!" Ratkit said, kneading her side with his paws, "You don't have to be sad! They're coming to save us!"
"Ratkit, nobody's coming," she said softly, licking the kitten's cheek. "Go to sleep."

"No! Mama, look!" The tiny kit wriggled out of her paws and trotted around to the front of the cage. Sitting up straight, Chillstep perked her ears, twisting to follow her son's gaze. Her heart skipped a beat. Coming through the smoke, three dark pelted cats slipped like stealthy shadows through the smoke, approaching the twoleg monster on quiet paws.

"Swan!" Chillstep hissed quietly.
"What is it, Chillstep?" the little she-cat perked up.
"Get ready, we're getting out of here." Standing, the blue tabby licked a sleepy Hushedkit up, nudging Cloudedkit to her feet. The cats had reached them now and they reared up to reach the cages.

"Chillstep," Ebonystar asked, his amber eyes glowing like fire, "Is everyone alright?"
"Yes, we'll be fine. What's your plan?"
"Darkstem knows how to open cages!" said Raggedstorm, casting an excited glance at the older tom.
"I might have an idea," the black tom said, "Let me take a look at the lock." He leaned forward, inspecting the small box on the door for a few moments before placing one paw on the top and one paw on the bottom. Pushing in on both, he pulled backwards and the door to Swan's cage swung open. The tabby and white she-cat leaped onto the stony ground, looking back up at Chillstep. Darkstem had already started on her lock. As soon as it swung open, she nudged Hushedkit forward.

"Get her to saftey," she said.
"Mama..." Hushedkit mewled, glancing back at her mother.
"Don't worry, my little shadow," Swan said, "I'll keep you safe." She took a step forward but Chillstep hesitated.
"Swan, let Darkstem carry her." She had watched as Swan just let the twolegs pick her up and she didn't want Hushedkit to be taken as well if the twolegs showed up. Swan gave Chillstep a confused look but Darkstem had already picked up the kit and looked anxious to go.
"Just go, we'll be right behind," Ebonystar ordered, "That means you too, Swan."
"Here," Chillstep said, handing Cloudedkit to Raggedstorm. Taking Ratkit in her teeth, she jumped down and urged Swan forward with a flick of her tail. Darkstem took the lead, Swan close behind.

"What about me?" wailed a tiny voice. Looking at the second row of cages, Chillstep spotted a tiny brown tom. Rootkit trembled, tears running down his soot stained cheeks.
"I'll get him, just keep going," growled Ebonystar, leaping up onto the monster's side and reaching for the latch. Chillstep nodded and set off at a brisk pace, accelerating into a run behind Darkstem and Swan.
