Description I try not to let dumb comments bother me anymore, but sometimes, I just gotta vent my frustrations.
So you guys remember my Sm4sh Shipping Meme ? You know, my most-viewed submission to this site? Well, there's one person who used it, and I feel they were an asshole about it. Rather than use it to have fun, they used it as a platform to whine express their disdain for, well, basically every ship in Smash Bros. that isn't "canonical."
The worst was him insulting people who ship Samus. He claimed that shipping Samus in fanfic or fanart "[makes] Samus weak to prove herself to a man," also claiming that it makes shipping more sexist than Other M. Honestly, this really bothered me, because it implies that when a woman is in a heterosexual relationship, she must be the submissive one, no matter what. Because surely no one ever writes women who are tougher than their male love interest, or even *gasp* equal in terms of strength! I feel it also comes across like he feels "feminine" is equivalent to "weak," which just reeks of toxic masculinity masquerading as feminism.
I thought I'd have Samus discuss this with Captain Falcon, a male character whom I ship her with. Both of them are some of Nintendo's toughest protagonists. And they have to be, being bounty hunters and whatnot. But if they were in a relationship, would either of them lose their badass nature? Honestly, I doubt it. Rather, I think they'd keep their strength up 100% . I don't think Samus is going to become some girly-girl just because she's in a relationship with a manly-man like the Cap, so I don't think she'd become weak to prove herself to him. In fact, I feel she might be the level-headed one, considering she seems more strategic and he seems a lot more hot-tempered and might get himself into trouble, needing her help to get out of it. But hey, what do I know?

Samus and Captain Falcon (c) Nintendo

This got way more charged than I expected it to be.

Come to think of it, there are many ships who happens to have the tough girl / reserved guy dynamic and works just as well as if it was gender-flipped, both in various medias and in real life. Stereotypes may be a thing, but that doesn't mean we can't subvert them.

Bottom line, I'm with you on this one.
