Description
The boy "Randi" from the classic SNES game "Secret of Mana".I LOVED this game as a kid. Still one of my favorite games of all time... I have never drawn any of the characters before, so I figured I'd give it a try! Just for fun, of course.

Really like his expression. He's got this smug, "I can take on the whole world!" face on him. It's keen! The fur trim on his vambraces and skirt are cuddly soft and well done. Loving his hair! It looks soft and the shading on it is great! You do cel shading on it or something different? It looks so interesting. Really dig this one. Nice job, Ray!

Thank you! And nope, no cel shading! It's just that different angles of lighting make for soft or hard transitions of color/shade, as does the material of the object being shaded. That's how we register 3D shapes, by the way the light interacts with them. Cel shading style is completely flat, and was developed to be able to shade animations, smoothly. There are some illustration styles that utilize the cel shaded "look", while still adding a bit of gradient, but I wouldn't say my color style is anything close to cel shading.

Oh wow! I like this a lot! xD And he always had the sword! I think the Prim had the bow once in a while and staff. The Sprite got the knuckles a lot.

I do actually have plans for a regular YouTube posting schedule. Right now, I don't have much on it, and it's all ancient garbage... But when I can upgrade my computer, I plan to record nearly everything I draw so I can post it. I used to do livestreams, but they took up too much time, and I got really busy... When work slows down, I might have to do livestreams again.

Secret of Mana (with Randi) came out August 6th, 1993.
Chrono Trigger (with Chrono) came out March 11th, 1995.
So how can a character be a copy of another character that didn't exist yet?
This is why I say that Chrono is more likely a copy of Randi, than the other way around.
Ever hear of the SNES-CD project? Probably not, because it was never released. It was intended to take the convenience of the cartridge consoles, and combined that with high storage capacity of compact discs. Secret of Mana was originally to be released for this system, and was virtually finished, but because the console was canceled, they decided to cut the game down immensely to fit into a SNES cartridge. There was lots of material that was left over, and much of it was later introduced into Chrono Trigger. This is why some Chrono Trigger characters look like Secret of Mana Characters (Chrono was created from leftover designs of SOM's Randi, and Marle was created from leftover designs of SOM's Primm). So with that in mind, you could say that they started as the same character! In the end, Chrono is a copy of Randi's design, officially speaking.

Probably! Plus, since Chrono came after, the design team could refine him more. They had Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Z) as the artist for Chrono Trigger, and he could add his spice to the characters.

Curiously though, I never liked Akira Toriyama's style, at least of Chrono Trigger... Never liked how he drew girls either.
