My fanon is that Ribby and Croaks we're sold by their parents to the Devil to settle a debt, and were used as hitmen like Cuphead and Mugman were. They grew upset with this development, and ran away, becoming bouncers at a club of flies, to keep out the undesirables, and finally feeling appreciated. When Cuphead and Mugman showed up to bring them back, the frogs decided it was only fair to give the cups a fight, and they weren't planning on working for the Devil again.
