Description This is the second drawing in the Wheel of the Year series that I am creating for greetings cards, to be sold at my mother-in-law's store in Norwich, CT [link]

This is for Ostara, the Spring Equinox. The holiday is a celebration of spring and growth, the renewal of life that appears on the earth after the winter. This is one of the two Sabbats when the adolescent Sun God celebrates a sacred marriage with the young Maiden Goddess. It is a time of great fertility, new growth, and newborn animals. The God may also be seen here as the newly crowned adolescent Stag King, resplendent in his finery and growing stronger with each day, until he reaches his peak at Midsummer, also known as Litha in neo-pagan traditions.

This drawing was done with:

Canson 9 x 12 inche 70 lb. Drawing paper
0.7 mm Rose Art mechanical pencil

(high tech, eh?)

EDIT: I blended the shading better, tried to add the shadow across her left breast, and blur the grass in the background to give the appearance of distance... let me know if you think it's any better! Also, I redid the clouds now that I have figured out the "right" way to render them!

.07 mm?!?! thats one really small peice of lead. how do you touch the paper without it breaking? I love the outfit. The cloth draping over her left elbow adds the best touch I think.

oops.... I meant 0.7 mm, LOL. My favorite part is the rabbit that is on her knee.

That's pretty good! Her breast on the left side of the screen seems a bit odd, the shading is a little weird... other than that, I'm impressed! I hope it sells well!

how is the shading weird, in your opinion? What would you change? I really appreciate the constructive criticism. It's hard to improve when all you get are compliments! Not that I mind compliments, LOL -- but it's good to have a balance of both!

I think I agree with what LadyoftheFayth said about where that one shadow would fall across, but only notice from the very well done shading elsewhere. Also I would like to have seen a warmer expression (slight smirk maybe) but only my opinion.. the awestruck one works too. Honestly though I like the whole thing, such great details, much more than I could or would be willing to tackle. My favorite part is the tree bark, love the texture.

It's because there's a higlight directly where the nipple would be, and since your light source is coming from the upper left, I think, due to the (excellent) shading that you have done, wouldn't the shadow of the arm fall across her chest if just a little?
Have a happy new year. ^_^
