Well, the trick with black and white photos are to shoot in color. It widens the depth of field, making the contrast while it's black and white a lot better, making for a pretty nice contrast.
When you go to edit your photo, instead of going and just clicking the black and white button, tint the photo with red. (red brings out the depth of field as well)THEN black and white it.
