nwver say never - how do you know until you try? this was just a lucky shape that came from a random batch for me

I did not say never. How is it that you make these designs? That is the one thing I have been meaning to ask you about.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-17 22:48:27 +0000 UTC]

by using a program called Apophysis that generates shapes using math ( lot less dull than that sounds) but i usually let the program do its own thing then when i get an interesting shape render/save that and then move to photoshop to finish things up

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-18 00:14:22 +0000 UTC]

How easy is this program to use and can it run on Vista? I would like to try my hand at it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-18 01:19:05 +0000 UTC]

pretty easy to run to be fair and i run it on vista on my desktop and on windows 7 on my laptop. best thing to do is take a peek at dA's resources section it has a lot of tutorials and such on apophysis that will help get you started.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-18 02:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Ok I shall take a look at the tutorials once I get it. Now then I googled it and found this site: [link] I went to the downloads page: [link] and I am confused as to what I am supposed to click on. Can you offer any help there?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-18 11:41:20 +0000 UTC]

thats the site - click on the downloads option near the bottom of that first page and then you want the link Apophysis 2.02 in white near the top of the next page there are more up to date versions but thats the one i use

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-18 22:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Ok I have it now and it is so confusing. Well I guess it will take me a while to get used to it. How long have you been using it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-18 23:32:48 +0000 UTC]

it does take a while to get to grips with - and i first used apophysis at the very end of December 2008 when ~VirginPrune suggested i try it which i did but he didnlt tell me anything how to use it so i kinda of muddled my way through and occasionally used the print screen key to take shapes i wanted into GIMP and Photoshop lol eventually thats got me here lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-19 02:09:01 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. Do you have any simple tips to get me started. I have tried looking at tutorials here but can't make since of them. This is a more complicated program than I have used before. That is saying something. I have learned photoshop, bryce, parts of 3Ds Max, and Maya, yet I have not worked with anything like this before.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-19 17:13:25 +0000 UTC]

treat it as cloud watching - jsut mess about with the settings and see what happens - anything interesting or useful save - ther are dozens of random batch flames that i wish i had saved but hindsight is a grand thing i can suggest for a group that might help some more as i will be the first to raise my hand and say i'm not entirely sure how i do what i do as i leave a lot to chance, that in turn helps me cause i'm a lot less rigid in my approach to creating - i did write a tutorial on how i manipulate my fractals using photoshop ( again starting with random batches) but it was for a magazine and i've yet to translate it to something more accessible to post on dA

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-20 02:50:11 +0000 UTC]

Final question for now. What do I save it as and how do I import it into photoshop?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-20 11:53:08 +0000 UTC]

use the render option to save it as a PNG. then just open that in photoshop alternitivley if liek me you get impatient print screen and just paste it into photoshop although that does give the black background which needs erasing

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-22 19:32:26 +0000 UTC]

Ok now I am starting to get the hang of saving it as a PNG. Now I just have to get used to the controls of the program itself. I just wish I knew how you get things to look the way you do. Is there a way for me to start with nothing and then add or do I have to start with a preset?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-22 21:21:54 +0000 UTC]

i'm stil doing that to be fair getting used to the controls.
there IS a way to start with nothing but i will confess i'm not sure how to do that lets hear it for epic failure on the part of Gem eh?
basically i just cloud watch as it were i play with shapes and then i get lucky when i do i take those shapes to photoshop. i'm being asked about a tutorial repeatedly so is hall have to dig out my old notes from an article i wrote and re-work them for dA

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-23 08:01:10 +0000 UTC]

Not an epic failure. Even I am still leaning photoshop and I have been working in it for a few years now. Hope you find your notes or just start a tutorial without the notes and just start us off with a simple heart tutorial or a basic mask or something like that. Just some simple step by step things. I know it is harder than it looks to make one of those. I have done one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-23 11:17:48 +0000 UTC]

well i found some of the notes but the magazine with the article i wanted to refer to ( for my images) a friend nabbed it yesterday while i was working to show his dad
the best person for heart flames and fractals is i belive shes got some packs of heart scrips and such. i'm really a bad person to try learn apophysis from as liek i say i leave all my starting points to chance usually i think yeah that shape looks a bit like a leaf or a flower petal or such and then take it to photoshop - same with figures - a lot of people ask me how i made my hand shape and the truth is i have no idea it happened by chance - which is a main reason i put it up as stock so people can take the image from there i believe made a quick tutorial as to how to make flower shapes from repeating a basic fractal shape. but i'm not sure weather she put it on her main account or her stock account - i know its in the :iconimanupilatefractals: group in the tutorial folder...
and on that note i begin to think i know my way round parts of dA far too well

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-25 08:23:01 +0000 UTC]

So what you are really saying is you never start out with an exact goal in mind for what you want to do? You just randomly play with things until you have a shape or pattern you like then you mix and match shapes in photoshop? And here I thought you had an exact way you did things.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rockgem In reply to Dark-Lord-of-Sith [2011-01-25 10:54:35 +0000 UTC]

my goals when i start are usually very basic - something like 'i want a vague petal/leaf/wing/twirly shape, etc.' and go from there its why i say my art is more luck than talent

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dark-Lord-of-Sith In reply to rockgem [2011-01-26 05:47:08 +0000 UTC]

Well you still come out with some amazing things that I still don't understand how you do it.
