Description I will be using Photoshop CS2 for this tutorial.

1. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour, and type in 131727. Click OK and set that layer to exclusion at 100%.

2. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour again, and type in CBD6E5. Click OK and set that layer to colour burn at 44%.

3. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour again, and type in 5B9493. Click OK and set that layer to soft light at 100%.

4. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour again, and type in E0BE55. Click OK and set that layer to soft light at 37%.

5. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > selective colour, check "relative" and fill this in:
Neutrals: -30, -6, -8, +15
Blacks: +29, -4, -11, +16
Set this layer to 35% opacity.

6. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > curves, click anywhere on the grid and fill this in:
Input: 20
Output: 23
Click somewhere else on the grid and fill this in:
Input: 94
Output: 115
Now click somewhere else on the grid and fill this in:
Input: 214
Output: 234
Now select "blue" from the drop-down list and click anywhere on the grid. Fill this in:
Input: 14
Output: 16
Click anywhere on the grid again and fill this in:
Input: 109
Output: 112
For the last time, click anywhere on the grid and fill this in:
Input: 221
Output: 214

7. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > selective colour, check "relative" and fill this in:
Reds: -27, +6, +20, +13
Yellows: -25, -15, -14, -20
Blues: -23, +3, -12, +26
Neutrals: +9, +8, +5, -13
Blacks: -7, -9, -3, +5

8. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > levels and fill this in:
Input: 17, 1.02, 247
Output: 5, 212

9. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > colour balance, check "preserve luminosity" and fill this in:
Shadows: -60, -100, +67
Midtones: +5, -5, -6
Highlights: -53, -54, -13
Set this layer to screen at 27%.

10. Duplicate the background layer and drag it to the top. Set it to soft light at 36%.

11. Go to layer > new fill layer > solid colour again, and type in 8EBCB9. Click OK and set that layer to soft light at 45%.

12. Go to layer > new adjustment layer > selective colour, check "relative" and fill this in:
Reds: -5, -13, -11, +41
Cyans: -45, -11, +7, +12
Blues: -78, -14, +24, -25

13. Finally, go to layer > new adjustment layer > brightness/contrast and fill this in:
Brightness: +3
Contrast: +5

Now merge the layers and you're done!

This is quiet nicely done, the detail on her chest wasn't needed anyway, now the attention, for me at least, goes straight to the red lips, and her skin has now a nice contrast to them.

it depends what colouring your photo was in the first place.. sometimes my photos look completely different as well.

merge visable merges the layers. did you go to layer > merge visable?
