Description Another one related to training, showing a possible thought process to work out heavier characters.

In the beginning there is the idea, the story you want to tell. I wanted an aged tough guy showing of his gun.

You could construct the base from imagination, given you have not only an understanding of muscles and how bodyfat connects to them, but how to put that overweight person in a comfortable stance. You can turn to reference instead - when you make use of what you see while thinking about the reasons behind it, you are buiding those abilities. I did some research and found something fitting: [link] I drew my base and adjusted the pose slightly to the idea. Some shading helps me to think threedimensional.

It pays off to think about how the base determines the outfit before you even start. Fabric is affected by gravity, the points of support, areas of compression and tension, so you work out were these effects are most defined and keep true to your logic while doing the folds. When you add a prop, you might think about its real life characteristics as well. The Colt Python, the revolver i referenced, weights nearly 3 pounds. Having that in your waistband would drag quite a lot. But its somewhat kept in place by fat too, since its engrossed by Hanks belly.

Nicely done and presented. So many folk simply do not realize these days the importance of figure study work.

I believe artists tend to think they have to shed it, to be above it - like something you graduate from once you reached the skill.
