Don't worry about it not being "perfect" - that's completely in keeping with this kind of design work!
I'd read once that ancient artisans were very superstitious about that kind of thing. They believed if the image was too realistic it would be seen as an offense to the creator gods, and you'd be punished for your arrogance. That's why so many zoomorphics are stylistic representations instead of something like the more realistic sculptures you'd find in Rome or Greece.
Besides, I think it's the little imperfections that give it more of a hand-crafted, personal character.
