Description The Enterprise and the Klothos are functionally slaved to one another as their combined energy is the only way that the two vessels can escape the pocket universe that underlies The Delta Triangle. Little does the Enterprise know that a bomb has been placed aboard her, designed to detonate just after the two ships separate. A “reimagined” scene from the animated episode, “The Time Trap”.

Rendered in DS3, postworked in Photoshop. Enterprise by Aggi, D-7 Cruiser by Prologic9.

It was fun to try to imagine that in a more realistic, non-cel-animation way.

I remember that episode ! Good job! And a heckuva lot more dynamic than the static side shot Filmation's limited budget allowed.

Oh man, you ain't kiddin'. Their effect was... well, I understand they had a budget and all, but still. Pretty lame.

Y'mean they have to go back into the pocket universe and out again?
With the Klingons??!?
They ain't gonna like that....

Wow! This one really takes your breath away! Great use of color and depth of field effects to create a breath-takingly dramatic image.

Thanks! I think this may be the first time any of my work gets described as "breathless"! NEAT! It sure is... quite the color statement. I can give it that much!

Fascinating! How do you create those motion effects?

RobCaswell In reply to DarthMael [2010-09-25 15:03:53 +0000 UTC]

I wish I could tell you everything I did, but it was one of those efforts where I knew where I wanted to go and just kept throwing more "paint" on it until I got there. But I can tell you the starting point and basics. I started with a Hubble image of the Orion Nebula. In Photoshop I used Radial Blur to spin it, then zoom-blur it. I then though a few more layers of the image over it and played with blending modes to get different effects. That's it at the core, but like I said, I just kept poking it until I got where I wanted to be.

That was most helpful, thank you One more thing I wanted to ask though - did you use any special camera pointers or effects (like Depth of Field, which stubbornly refuses to install on my PC ) in DAZ Studio?

RobCaswell In reply to DarthMael [2010-09-25 18:07:20 +0000 UTC]

DOF refuses to install? Uh... are you sure? I never heard of that happening. Are you sure you're trying to use it correctly?

Oh - and there's no DOF here.

It says it cannot detect my installation of DAZ Studio, though it's right in its proper place on my C drive o_O

Hm. No clue. Have you contacted DAZ tech support?

DarthMael In reply to RobCaswell [2010-09-25 23:10:18 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but did not receive any useful reply. They only said that it's either because of wrong folder names/locations or I have a wrong DS version. Not the case, both of them.
I, on the other hand, think it's a Windows problem - most likely a bad registry issue. Nothing a complete system reinstall wouldn't fix XD

Great Job! I remember that episode. I remember thinking that top section of the D-7 was just made to craddle the Enterprise. It was really the only place to put her.

RobCaswell In reply to mdbruffy [2010-09-25 14:57:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it did seem like a strangely natural fit... and even worked that way with the models! I'm not sure what they used to join the ships together (maybe it said in Foster's "Log.."?), but who cares. It was a neat image The original TV effect was just a cheap whirlpool. It seemed like the barrier between two universes deserved more... "presence and energy".

True. maybe someday they'll "remaster" the animated episodes.

yeah, I like to dream.

Eventually, that's my plan, and specifically, "The Time Trap" itself - that's why I've been building all these sets . Arcass, that's a gorgeous image of the escape - please PM me if you're interested in contributing to the project - I've been looking for people who, frankly, are a lot better at this than I am and who are as enthusiastic - you certainly fit the bill! D.

That might be fun It'd be great if they were able to overlay new musical cues, too. MAN those things get tired quick....

Ptrope In reply to RobCaswell [2010-09-25 16:59:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm with you there, but since my project intends to replace the visuals while using the original soundtrack (the only way I know to keep the dialogue), we're kind of stuck with the music and sound f/x . At the very least, I've been looking for "Space, the final frontier ..." without any music at all, so a new theme can be used, but no luck so far ...

Thanks Bladed-Dude! This was always one of my fave animated eps, back in the day... but maybe because we got to see so many new ships in that graveyard.
