What did you use for the background?
And did you do a lot of editing to this, or minimal?

It's like DA doesn't want me to respond to this.
Chalkboard for the background.
Minimal editing.

Because everything I've ever shot with my 20D, even with L glass on it, has been softer than what I've shot with a D70 with a Sigma lens.

Seeing this comment again...
Actually, I need to add in, the only thing I've ever seen that can compare to slides from my Bronica in terms of sharpness (in digital) is a Leaf Aptus back on a Hasselblad.
Example for comparison.

Hmm, I love that punchy background colour. Contrasts beautifully with his rather gloomy appearance and intense stare.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is that he isn't centered; I think that would have made this portrait even more powerful.

nice use of the strip lights.

I might have included just a touch more of his forehead and hair, just to bring the eyes a touch closer to the top third line, rather than scraping the edge of the image.

But very strong.

Wow.
Incredible shot. It's so crisp and clear.
The lighting is great. There's something about it. I'm not sure what though. :]
