Started this on the 20th of July, 2013, and this is the result after around 150 hours of work. I finished it yesterday (whew)-The whole thing is made out of coloured paper--except for the plastic over the eye.
-Each of Smaug's scales was cut individually and took about 3 days to finish.
-The 800 or so coins/jewels were also cut individually (each had a diameter of about 2-5mm), and that task took me about 4 hours to complete.
-Bilbo himself took all of 2 days.

And I wish DevArt allowed some cross-posting so you could have posted this to the papercraft category too!
(I do understand why they don't allow it, so young & eager artists can't spam ALL the groups with their first crayon drawing of Sonic the Hedgehog--and, for that matter, so someone having a bad day can't post his graphic adult horror pic to people discussing needlework and cake decorating. But if they just allowed, say, 2-3 different categories.... Still, I guess that's part of what DevArt groups are for.)
