do some of them have words that you type? like 'yay' and stuff then you ust put : at the start and end?

Well, i'm not exactly sure what you mean. You can't just type any word and expect it to be an emoticon. There are certain codes. Like:
:huggle : = (minus the space)
:glomp : =
:love : =
theres a list of the codes on the lower right hand corner in the reply box.
it'll look like this: Emoticons
