out of question that our generation did a lot of good things to improve living together in this world. but it seems that some essential things went terribly wrong. not going to mention the bush word in this context (which would be much deserved) - there are others, too.
when it comes to cooking, LΓΊcia always is very skeptic when it come to slight modifications of traditional recipes ...
in my youth cooking was dominated by the war experience with much lack of any food as it seems. so butter and cream were the main ingredients to create flavor to your dish. nobody ever thought of herbs or spices.
then the Italian people arrived and we (young ones - previous generations thought it was devil's work) had an explosion of new experiences and sort of grew up with experiments and giving up "traditional" cooking. only after maybe the turn of the century there was a revival of the REAL traditional cooking - which of course has nothing to do with the post-war cooking

that's very interesting and that revival of the real traditional sounds like a good thing.

i grew up with bland cooking but it was due to living on a farm in northern New England. then i came a little bit south and discovered so many wonderful flavors.

last year i was cooking too many of the same things all the time, so we subscribed to a grocery and recipe service, every tuesday i get a box of ingredients and recipes, and it's had me doing things i never would have thought of. lots of spices, lots of roasted vegetables, and many modifications to traditional recipes. last night was catfish with caper/lemon sauce over black lentils and collard greens - tonight was chicken with olive/meyer lemon sauce over potatoes with fennel and lemon

going back to politics and things in general our generation did do much good - but here in the u.s. we underestimated the very organized pushback from the right wing who are dedicated to the rule of old white men. i don't mean that as a joke - they are against women, against people of color, against the young. and they have been working hard since the time of presidents Kennedy and Johnson to put themselves in power and stay there. Reagan was their first great victory. both Clinton and Obama were pulled far to the right of where they should have been. and now Herr T. is their grand success.
