Description We learned something from a Ranger before we took this walk: As bear have been encountered on this
particular trail, we were told that, if we 'make contact' with a bear, DON'T RUN* ~ make loud noises, or talk LOUDLY with
others, open up your jacket (to look bigger), and STAND YOUR GROUND. The bear will most likely just amble away. AND,
if your run across a moose, do just the opposite: RUN LIKE HELL. Moose will charge, not because they would ever eat us,
but they'll trample us to death, if angry enough. One of our Naturalist Guides (one of the most inspirational, 'into it' people I have ever met,)
told us he had been charged 4 times by a moose. There's not a lot of wildlife in Denali ~ they just don't like people
mixing it up with them. But there are occasions....
*Their genetics tell them to "CHASE, CHASE, EAT, EAT....!!!"

Great faerie-eye view. And good bear/moose advice to boot.

Coincidently, the same day I posted that pic/advice, I read on the Comcast
news that a group of 6 hikers in the woods of New Jersey (I believe ~ didn't know
they even HAD woods in New Jersey) were met by a black bear. They all RAN. The
bear chose one to chase, caught up with him, and killed him. If only they had read
my advice! THANKS so much for the great comment, and for writing to me!!!!

Regards: Richard

Coincidently, I just heard on the internet news of one of six hikers ~ I believe in New Jersey ~ who was
mauled to death by a black bear. Too bad they could not have read my advice above. They ALL RAN....and the
bear simply picked out one, and caught him. I'm pretty sure you're not doing much hiking in bear territory
Trish (nor do I)...so I'll not worry for you. But, you all stand advised!

Thanks for writing...so nice to hear from you...

No ....The things that kill you here are bike riders...Since the tour de France Β bikes came through the uk earlier this year There has been a massive surge of people on bikes........Everywhere you go!!!==============

I am especially cautious on the walk path (asphalt) that runs around
Staring Lake. YOU are so right...people have been killed by being hit by
a too-fast moving bike. So sad...If I ride my bike around the lake I go at a snail's
pace around people, esp as many are walking (and pooping!) their dogs
on long leashes. The speed of the Tour de France racing must be incredible.
Let's stay away from them...ok?

I Β get off my bike if I am on a busy road and have to turn right against oncoming traffic....I get off an d cross on the walking crossing then get on it again on the other side....I don't drive for the same reason...Don't like traffic

Going to school on a bike is easier...it's only quiet roads
