Question, do you do a sketch underneath first or do you just go at it?

I did make sketches for these drawings, drafting with pencil and colored pencil on newsprint. Here's the tortoise's sketch: . The sketches were then set over a lightbox and VERY lightly traced to provide a guide for the final ink drawing. The sketches were key for planning how large the animals should be relative to the size of the paper.
