Cute! Hey, the slightly-distressed stripey background is pretty interesting. Is that a custom texture?

Well, do you have a scanner or a digital camera? A while back, I got some pretty nice effects with "distressed" paper by doing a few fairly simple things such as crumpling the paper and then scanning it, or brewing some tea and then deliberately making tea stains on the paper in various ways (drops, spills, smears, splatters, or practically just soaking the paper).

I also tried burning paper with a candle over a sink (so I could douse the flame quickly before it got out of hand), but that falls squarely under "Don't try this at home, kids!" as I ended up setting off the smoke alarm. (Still, the results once scanned were pretty good. I just should have done this outside, on the driveway, with a bucket of water handy, rather than trying that inside.) I actually used those for Twilight Creations, when I did the "weird science blueprint" illustrations for some of the cards for the Deadlands "Battle of Slaughter Gulch" board game.

Hmm. I suppose I ought to do a few tea-stain papers and burnt-edges and scan them in and upload those as "art" (and mark them as "free to use"), as those might be useful for graphic elements to spare anyone else having to deal with the resulting mess.

huh....hahah i never even thought to do any of that!!! those ideas are fantastic!!!! i took my scanner home, so id have to wwait 2 weeks to scan anything...but i have tea here...and paper...so i might try out some tea stain things. hahaha ive burnt paper before cept mine never stayed lit lol it always went out so i didnt have to deal with the water or the smoke alarm haha. and you should! people would love that and itd be really usefull!! lol i might do the same thing too XD

Here's another note about trying tea-stains on paper:
1) Try thicker-gauge paper such as coverstock or cardstock. It's likely to hold up better to the abuse from being soaked/stained.

2) Let it air-dry before you try scanning anything. If you're impatient, you could try speeding up the process with a hair dryer, but putting a soggy piece of paper on a scanner is a recipe for a mess. I know. I'm impatient.

3) You can also get interesting effects by making multiple passes on the paper. I.e., stain it, let it dry, then stain it again. For other interesting effects, there's the ever-popular "coffee mug stain ring" if you want to go for that "mission-briefing paper" look, or else try experimenting with creasing/folding the paper AND applying stains. The folds/creases will affect how the tea stains bleed into the paper.

4) Experiment! If the result is boring, you can always abuse the paper some more and see how it works. If nothing else, you could just try TEARING paper in interesting ways, so you can get a "torn edge" look. (However, this works better with thicker paper, as it's more likely to have a more visible edge on the scanner bed.) I've just stained and burned and crumpled a few papers; I'm sure there are far more interesting effects I could get with a little work. (I've seen some interesting "parchment" effects when some leaked oil got onto some paper ... but the result was so messy I don't think I'd ever want to put it directly on a scanner!)
