Description It's Scotland... the middle of December. Much colder than it looks.

I've been going out to that spot in the evening for a couple of nights in a row.
I'm not completely happy with this image, but it's the first time I've ever gotten an HDR image to look presentable, so I'm uploading it out of excitement more than anything else.

very nice colors. i wonder why the tree is black, if you did use HDR it shouldn't?

Okay, I went back and had another look at the original exposures.

This is the brightest one I took: [link]

Even there the tree is very dark. The sun was right behind it.

RevelationSpace In reply to dkraner [2007-12-31 17:54:12 +0000 UTC]

I just decided that I preferred it to be a silhouette.

It's HDR in the sense that it's several different exposures combined, but I chose to leave the tree dark anyway by removing the highlights on it. Several people have asked about that, so I think I'll go back and make the tree brighter again to see how it looks.

Heh, I've always wanted an IR filter. It's on my endless list of things to buy, so I'll get one some day and retake the photo.

Honestly, this is just stunning, excellent attention to the exposure value with getting that foreground nicely lit, I like this, and good call on not overdoing the HDR which seems to happen a lot these days. Fantastic shot

Quite nice beginning with HDRI photography.

Good balance of light and sharpness.

I already tried without success. It's always difficult and give random results.

RevelationSpace In reply to Shahenshah [2006-12-27 21:16:15 +0000 UTC]

Just practise at it.

It's pretty hit-and-miss with me, sometimes the results look okay, sometimes they really don't. Mostly the don't.

dIESL [2006-12-26 12:49:13 +0000 UTC]

wonderful colours!! i think the very detailed tree makes it not easier to work with this picture...
i just began experimenting with the HDR - technique but the results look somewhat...hmmm... poor

cool to see what beatyful pictures you can do with HDR!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RevelationSpace In reply to dIESL [2006-12-26 14:38:41 +0000 UTC]

I kinda cheated with the tree.

It looked terrible on the original HDR.

I got the ground to look the way I wanted it in HDR, then I layered one of the original photos over the top of it, so just the sky and the tree was visible.

I'm not very good at HDR, but I practise it a lot so I'm slowly starting to get acceptable results.

RevelationSpace In reply to wilderBeest [2006-12-24 22:20:37 +0000 UTC]

Hehe thanks a lot.

If you're going to try HDR (which you should, because it's awesome ) make sure you have a lot of patience.

I've tried to get an HDR photo to look good... so many times, I've lost count.

It takes a lot of patience to get a decent result, unless you're exceptionally skilled or lucky. So don't get discouraged if a photo doesn't come out right first time.

Good luck anyway.
