Aww, look at him! He's stunning - I love how much spirit and life there is in this pose, and I always adore how you draw your manes and tails; so full and fantasyesque with the curls.
His markings look amazing, as usual; I love how you've captured the metallic shine of the gold and the sharp contrast of the white looks great. I still say his sooty dapples are perfect, too - the way you do them really suits him ^^
Good luck in the show!

You're welcome!
And join the club; I have a list of things I actually need to be doing (really overdue show prizes, a bridle tutorial, stuff for my Fire Dancer breed, Kiwi's reference etc...) but I get randomly inspired and end up just doing other stuff anyway. But then, I think art is better those times it happens by accident, or because we're inspired, not when we're forcing ourselves.
But the words were totally deserved Good references really help, but kudos to you for capturing that, too. And yes, I think I always do dapples a little different, too (that said, I'm sure there's a brush pack around somewhere for them...), but its good to alter and experiment, otherwise you might never stumble across a method you really like ^^.
And that's the spirit Just get him out there and hope for the best. And even if he doesn't place, it's all experience and he still gets points for entering. But yes; you're definitely welcome to put him into the Turn Back Time event! That would be great, and it would be wonderful to see his mom, if you show her! Of course its totally dependent on you having time and inspiration, but there's a month to get something in, so here's hoping
As for genetics (and don't worry; tangents are my specialty ) I LOVE them. *rolls up sleeves* (I will however note you, since this could get long...)

Same; its the best feeling to just be really driven to pick up my tablet, even if I should be doing something else. The downside is my inspiration often hits at midnight, and I end up drawing in the early hours
Experimenting is good I'm not sure I can help with remembering methods - I tend to be able to remember my steps pretty well (sometimes I'll do a few, stop, then layer by layer, go back and mutter to myself what's on each, and that helps it stick in). The times I don't remember, hiding one layer at a time can help jog my memory, but otherwise there's nothing to stop you writing things down as you go along. Even if you make another layer on the file and keep it just to scribble notes like 'overlay used. Brush 45 with settings...' 'set to multiply. Added texture' and the like. You can delete or hide the layer any time, but you can keep a quick and easy record, too. I know its all too easy to forget when you're in the zone, though
But its great you're going to draw him and his mum for the show! I'm really thrilled with how many people have been adding in their horse's mothers; I think it adds some great depth to see that even our starters had lives before HARPG. Maybe that's just me being sad...
And you're welcome for the genetics note

Inspiration at midnight!?! I can barely draw after 10pm these days... LOL. That's very impressive. And if that's what works for you, keep it up... because I love seeing your artwork!
Yeah, I figure I'll keep experimenting until something really "sets" itself into my memory (assuming I capture the dapple look correctly). I'm all for practice and experimentation.
And I'm really excited for your TBT show... have a couple of horses I could picture drawing for that now (Muse is working on overdrive all of a sudden... ).

Haha, yep, and sometimes, if I'm still up, it'll hit at two in the morning, then I'm really stuffed, because I have to at least sketch something so I don't lose the idea, and I can never stop with just a sketch, so I end up staying up half the night...its not a good thing, but my muse is evil, so its expected. As long as my midnight art is enjoyed, that's what makes it worth it ^^
That's a good outlook. I know a lot of people who don't have the patience or (and I will say this) the dedication to explore with their tools. I've had photoshop two years now, and I still stumble onto things I can't use and haven't seen, and you only really learn through giving things a go. The users manual, if you read it at all, which I didn't, can only go so far. I definitely think you'll get what you want soon, being that you're willing to keep at it where others would just give up
I'm glad you're excited for that! I can't believe I've had a huge handful of entries already! I definitely think I'll need to run another like it when this one ends Another flatcolour thing, but with a different theme...I'll have to think of one. Anyway, you definitely have to get in a couple of entries! Or Nazeer's at least (good stuff! Make the muse work )

Sometimes I'm shattered by ten pm, other times I'm not tired come four in the morning. I think it really depends; and my sleeping patterns can be a bit wacky. It does get annoying, though, that I'll suddenly just *need* to draw something and it's nearly midnight and I actually want to go to bed, but I need to get an idea down first (and if you can bribe Muse, I'll happily get inspired earlier in the evening. She's very resistant XD)
Sometimes I'm the same; I fall into a rut where I know how a few things work and I figure 'why mess with it?' but now and then I'll just start randomly clicking buttons and using brushes until I get a feel for what they do. I almost exclusively shade with an airbrush now (God's gift, really) and I found that by a total accident and never looked back. Join the club, though - I don't read manuals, or do tutorials (unless I'm looking for something specific). I'm getting better at looking for good references, but I still like to just doodle and draw from my mind. And the important part is that its fun. Art is too complex and individual and difficult, too, to spend time on it if you don't enjoy the work.
I've got a fantastic turnout already! Eight entries as of this morning, including two of my own. And its been posted for about three days. I definitely have to run more like this. Thanks, too, for spreading the word! I didn't know you had sisters, or that they dabbled with RP (they're on DA, I'm guessing?) but they're definitely welcome, too. As I said in the journal, I think flat colours - done properly - are actually a skill to learn and they improve your art, so I'm trying to put across this idea that just because it's flat, doesn't mean it's one colour and that's it. I can't wait to see your entries, either!

I agree, art needs to be fun... even if I don't utililze PS to it's fullest extent (because I don't want to spend time on tutorials to learn all the tools). Sometimes, just drawing what my Muse inspires is so much better. And I'm a huge fan of the airbrush brush... I use that all the time.
And it's really fun with my sisters on here (they're both younger than me). We each have our own characters and stories (I do HARPG, *EspressoOnTheRocks loves pokemon, and *monymay14 is writing a story with all her own characters), but then we have overlapping interests as well (Cavitto for all of us, Fawnlings for 2 of us), so we can do art trades/RP's together and talk with each other about our plots/storylines. It's totally geeky... and I love it. And on rare occasion, when we vacation together, we totally just do drawing-parties (hanging out together and sharing our love of our created OC's). I think they are both feeling inspired to do flashback images of their Cavitto horses now, as foals... and we all love the flat colored idea. I'm actually really excited to see how many entries you end up with this, because I have a feeling you're gonna get an impressive turnout!

I do love having them to "play" with me. We're all sorta little geeks at heart (like the same movies, books, etc) and enjoy dA a lot. So it's fun to get together - we're all content to put in a favorite movie or soundtrack, and then just draw together. I love it.
And, I'm super excited, because Monica (monymay14) is starting vacation today... she is flying up to stay with me for 12 days... she arrives later tonight! 13 hours Not that I'm counting or anything.
So we are hoping to get some more art done, aside from visiting with friends and family, in the next 2 weeks! So here's to hoping for a few more foal/flashback entries for your contest.

Hahaha, no worries (that's like standard reply time for me when I have a busy work/family schedule).
And yay... a hamster! They are so cute!
I can't wait to hear what name you pick out for it.
And Monica is still here ( ), so we're having fun balancing socializing and art time right now. We're actually both coming up with some dress designs/inspiration for our handlers attending Bridgewater's ball. So hopefully we can get that done in the next week or so. Good times at Bridgewater!
And no worries, you just take your time getting to my art... it's not going anywhere.

Hamster pics! Yes please... and would love to know which name you guys settle on, too.
Yeah, I'm starting the lines for my Ball entry. Ugh, humans are definitely not my thing. But even so, I'm excited to draw something different. I didn't even realize there were prizes for that class, I just love the idea of it. I think it's something that is so fun (and different from the usual HARPG comps)... gives us a chance to really do something different with our people, and I love that idea. I really hope there are a of entries for this class... so much fun to see what everyone comes up with.
