Description This character was done for the Mass Effect Club's "New Generation" Challenge.

Edit: Adjusted her skin color, did more work on her armor, fixed her gun handles, and did a little bit of touch up.

Below is a brief on her character. A more involved story about the Gorgons can be found here. : [link]

Name: Sabine Taylor
Parents: Jacob Taylor & Miranda Lawson (yeah, I went there)
Age: 28
Class: Infiltrator

Who She Is:

Sabine is the youngest of Miranda and Jacob's two daughters, and growing up she was the most troublesome as well. She is a (sometimes volatile) mix of her father's emotional constipation and her mother's savvy for problem solving. Due to her mixed heritage and decorated parents, Sabine can be very proud. She believes she is the best of the both worlds, and her tastes in hairstyle, clothing, and music tend to reflect that. Sabine takes herself seriously and has a high level of accountability. She hates batarians, liars, and cowards. She loves kids, opera, and going new places. She admires turian discipline and their respect for history.

What She Is:

Finding the Alliance military too strict and broad in their goals, Sabine left home in search of a better way to apply her combat skills, and eventually encountered Gorgon - an all-female anti-trafficking group known for heavy border-patrol and the occasional blitz attack into batarian territory to recover kidnapped slaves. Such events are called "emancipation missions" and are not Council-sanctioned.

How Gorgon Operates:

During these runs, one or two Gorgon cells will team up and send forth a solo operative responsible for infiltrating the targeted slave compound. Once the operative is inside, she will determine the compound's layout and relay pertinent information to her comrades. The operative then has the option of distributing a nerve toxin to disable enemies, but only if she can guarantee the captives will not be harmed. In either case, the remaining cell members will descend on the base, collect their human cargo with as little bloodshed as possible, and return to their ships to bee-line back to Citadel space.

Gorgon is small but growing, and their appeal amongst asari communities is spreading fastest. When considering ships, they prefer speed to size and stealth to firepower, for obvious reasons. Run-ins with turian military patrols are not uncommon, as they make up the bulk of the Citadel's security in outlying space where Gorgons normally operate. Though Gorgon is not recognized in any official capacity, the two parties generally respect one another's mission priorities and go their ways peaceably after a brief report of the incident is logged.

Trivia:

Gorgons sometimes refer to the targets of their missions by the codeword "statue(s)" - a dual reference to the creature of myth whose gaze turned men to stone (or the target the Gorgon is searching for) and to the fact rescued slaves are often transported back to safety in cyro (and thus appear inanimate).

Final Word:

Sabine's cell consists of fourteen operatives, including four asari commandos. She has completed eight missions outside Citadel space and is the go-to solo operative for initial contact. When space combat is inevitable, Sabine has the training necessary to man a gunnery station.

Miranda and Taylor? Oh come on, as if were any doubt who'd end up the dominant partner in that relationship So I do think she'd be named Sabine Lawson. (as for Miranda's sterility, that feels so tacked on, and it seems very unlikely there'd be no remedy in the 2180s... hell, they realistically should have artificial uteri by then. So I think you're right to ignore that).

Also "Gorgon" seems a bit to reminiscent as a name to Cerberus. And only recruiting one gender seems a bit of a waste...

But your portraits of Sabine are quite nice. I like the style, and how you painted her!

A bit of a waste? Hasn't kept the US military from banning women on the frontlines until very recently.

Oooo, SNAP.

Well, yeah, but apparently that's definitely not an issue anymore in the ME 2180s. Which makes sense: Progress will march on. So having an organization with an one-gender militia in the 2180s or afterwards seems a bit odd, like a relapse or something, heh.

It's not about what is 'effective' though. It's a social statement, and the Gorgons are not all human to begin with so comparing them to human standards is dumb anyway. They're a mixed race mercenary company, therefore they do as they please and don't have to appeal to the masses. Independents can do as they please. You may have noticed the-all asari merc group in ME2? Is that 'effective'? No.

I love her backround story. Do you have a written fan fiction for her?

The character design looks great. It's really such a shame that Miranda can't have children, though, because she and Jacob would make some beautiful babies.

I think people of mixed ethnicity in general come out very beautiful looking.

Thank you. I thought about it for awhile, wondering if it would look out of place in a sci-fi setting, but Sabine is very proud of her background and I think it suggests strength.

Well no infact I can see "Dreads" or what ever their called being very scifi-ish, I've seen those Cyberpunk chicks with the "Falls?" or what ever their called very reminnesnt of dreads. Also, they kinda would remind me of 'cords' like for computers, and then can be scifiish in that sense.

There should totally be a dread hair option in the third game. D:

She strikes quite a haughty pose.

A little more work is needed, I think. Mostly just neater blending (try hard-edged brushes in lower opacity, or speckled brushes instead of the airbrush), and a little more colour variation to make her skin tone richer (right now it's a bit flat, rather too reddish, and also blurry). ~navate has some brilliant guides on skin tones, particularly for darker ones: [link]

Love the character, love the story, and love the power! But the hair is too retro! XD
But still she sounds bad ass! As do the Gorgons, but huh not another Greek based name for a group! lol
But seriously this came out great, good work on it!

Retro? No way! Dreads make her look fierce. (she was also very inspired by Ronon Dex from Stargate Atlantis)

Surrogacy? I took the thing to mean that an egg simply wouldn't implant and she'd always miscarry.

remthemighty In reply to Narukami90 [2010-11-14 19:14:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, I could just as easily say she's Shepard and Jacob's child and it would still roll. I started painting her before working on a story. My main goal was to use Jacob as a parent because I know he doesn't get a lot of attention.
