Description Well Fenrir wasn't actually the one who chased the moon, it was one of his...kids? Either Skoll or Hatti, I can't remember which one. I think it's Hatti, but I could be wrong.

Either way, the wolf will chase the moon until Ragnarok, when it's jaws will finally blot out it's light forever.

Unlike some other cultures, the ancient Norsemen saw the moon as a masculine figure, and the sun as a feminine figure. From reading the myths, it seems that although the norse did see women as being soft and not neccesarily suited for fighting or ruling, they at least did not see them as being dark and devious.

I love the composition and the colors here. And yes, it was Hatti.

I am pretty sure it was Manegarm (can be spelled in lots of different ways, even in English) who chased the Moon
Great painting by the way! Great inspiration.

Stay creative,

Manegarm?

Garm was a giant dog that guarded Hela's hall.

Skoll and Hatti chased the sun an moon.

And thanks!

From the fact that it was suggested that article should be merged with the one about Hati, and the fact that the article about Hati notes that Managarmr is just another name for Hati, I think that we are in fact talking about the same wolf, who can be called either Hati or sometimes Managarmr.

It could be that Managarmr was just a name used in Denmark, since Snorri was Danish and this name comes from his writings.

Well, yes, actually, they are the same, but MΓ‘ngarmr is like a title he was given when he did that job
And no, MΓ‘nagarmr is not a name used in Danish, since it doesn't even sound like a Danish word and/or name It sounds kind of Norse though. Norse as in the ancient Norse tongue

Cool idea to show the moon as a warriorΒ΄s shield... reflecting SunnaΒ΄s far light.

There are quite a few norse artifacts where the sun and moon were depicted as shields being drawn along by chariots.

Yeah, like the Trundholm sun chariot.
I was in an Egyptian exhibition today and saw the typical depictions of the sun disc on a boat.

If I'm not mistaken, in Nordic culture the man pocessed the sword and the woman pocessed the house's key; it meant that they both were equalls, for they were lords of their own territories. Locking their husbands out of the house was a common punishment!

Yep, that was pretty much exactly how it all went down. Men and women just had different jobs, it wasn't that one was superior.

Viking women were pretty tough ladies, and it's true that some of them did fight like men. However, by and large, most women were wives and mothers who ran their husband's farms.

This might seem kind of lame to modern people, where we have little houses with just a few people but back then, "taking care of the home" was a massive job, especially if your husband was a man of means. The head wife managed the farm, the money, all the servants and household workers, supervised the slaughter of animals....basically she ran the place.

Marriage was more of a business arrangement in that culture: You picked a husband based on how much property and money he had, rather like you would look for a job with a company that seemed to be doing well and wasn't likely to go out of business soon. It was considered completely acceptable to divorce your husband if his family fell on hard times, because it would be wrong to burden the wife with taking care of destitute relatives.

So although Norse women WERE mostly housewives, there was a lot more prestige attached to that position than there is in our society. On the other hand, there was very little idea of "romance" and it was actually illegal at one point to write love poems to a woman if you weren't yet married (even if you were engaged).

Though the moon is male, and the sun is female, that is not to say there isn't a moon goddess. Baldar's wife, Nanna, is consider a goddess of the moon. I believe that because of her closeness with Baldar she has taken in ( or started with ) skin that would be like the moon and has a soft manner around her.
Anyway, that's an awesome picture. Good use of Norse gods in your pictures.

This is probably decades too late! But i have recently been researching on this exact topic!

Hati and Skoll are both Fenrir's children, or the equivalent of children to gods. Odin, the all mighty one, chained Fenrir, because he had predicted that Fenrir would try to rebel. Hati and Skoll for some reason or other chase respectively the moon and the sun and when they do destroy the chariots and holders of these powers Fenrir would be set free and would latter go on to kill Odin as predicted.
It is not clear wheither or not this is done long ago or in a distant "armagedon" future. Or it could be both!

Very interesting interpretation I am definately faving!

Hmmm I thought the Sun and Moon were there before Fenrir was born and, in order to get the cycle of Night and Day Hati and Skoll were there too....although in Norse Mythology Night and Day are people too....I didn't think that Hati and Skoll were FEnrir's kids...
I'm Pagan and I don't even know ^_^;

dude I don't have any idea. I can't remember at all if Skoll and Hatti were even marginally related to Fenrir.

The sun and moon are people, and also day and night. (so four separate riders in all.) but only the sun and moon are chased by wolves. the riders for day and night are both jotun, if I remember correctly. Their horses had awesome names, but I totally don't remember what they were.

Yeah I can't remember the horses names either. Maybe one was Goldenmane...or was that a Giant's Horse?
I'm pretty sure Fenrir isn't related to Hati and Skoll. Ah well, great pic!

Odin's steed was Sleipnir, and he has 8 legs. I'm not sure it that's the horse you wanted to show or not. The story is that Once Hati and Skol swallowed the moon and the sun, it would be Ragnarok, and Fenrir would be released and kill Odin. Looks like that's what your art's about, in which case his horse needs two more sets of legs

The drawing itself is fantastic.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Eadlin In reply to house-mouse [2008-10-31 19:36:31 +0000 UTC]

It's not Odin. The artist said it was the Moon being chased. I've forgotten his name in Norse mythology but both the Sun and the Moon have chariots and horses. ^_^;
Odin got Sleipnir because of Loki REALLY taking one for the team and though he did get them into a fine mess in the first place, that was some sacrifice! Loki is awesome! ^_^

Relotixke In reply to Eadlin [2010-09-24 19:01:27 +0000 UTC]

Loki is pretty awesome.

And no, it is not odin, so the horse is not sleipnir.

I know I said "fenrir" but that is just because I couldn't remember which was the correct wolf.
