It is a natural phenomenon in the Loop; rifts/splits/fissures often appear on its furthest physical borders, but usually are small, unstable and can pop up and vanish with no pattern. These are cracks leading out of the world to somewhere; locals confront each other for the privilege of owning these holes as they see a possible way out to the normal world in this, but still no hear from the "returned". Because of this, they also use them to get interesting things into the Loop - it's the main way to make unususals, for example.

The Rift with a capital R is, though, the biggest, visible from any spot of the world black, stable scar on their reality canvas, plunging endlessly up into the sky and down into the ground - which is in fact an illusion, it has physical ends. It is located in the Germany sector and is zealously guarded by the Mourtair. Their bases are partially consumed by it, however despite that mourtairs bravely keep not giving a damn about it and live in Cube if it's been filmed in Hogwarts. Maniac went even deeper and almost permanently lives in the Emptiness and has his own business there.
